Money grab? Sure. But I’m with you. Plus I love symmetry. 17 is a weird number.

In mathematical terms, 17 is "weird" because it's prime. That is, it's not evenly divisible by any integers other than 17 itself and 1. The owners were aware of this when they got the players to agree to a near-immediate increase to a 17-game season with the possibility of an 18-game season in the not-too-distant future.

As a fan, sure…more games for us to watch.

But, 18 is a bit much. 17 is as well. The abuse these guys take, with a 53 man roster, is unparalleled in sports.

How many of the end-of-season games actually matter? I know we’ve had a few seasons where there were still implications pertaining to the last game. I’ve seen that in basketball (82 regular season games) as well.

Not a good idea imo.

Yeah, they should expand the rosters by a player or two, at least.

JPat answered the basic question, of course. There are a lot of additional costs that go beyond basic pay as well. I could see them adding 2-5 more players, but not more.

17 games is plenty. It dove tails into their efforts to expand the international series as each team with 9 home games could be required to play one of them at an international or domestic neutral site.

Have to increase the roster size and have two byes. Increased cap to account for larger roster

I agree with the general consensus. Up the roster size and add another bye week, if they're gonna do this.

I don't know if I'm necessarily for this, because I think 17 games is plenty. Didn't we JUST switch to 17 games, too? Whatever happened to letting this play out for 10 or more years before deciding to adjust things again?

16 games held from 1978 to 2021. I assumed it would eventually get to 18, but not this fast. It will slightly reduce the importance of winning divisional games to qualify for playoffs the more games you add.

It decreases the importance of all regular season games.

And where's the limit? Why not eliminate all preseason games and go to a 20-game schedule?
