Giacomini on Farrar's All-NFL Overrated Team

After talking about Jermon Bushrod:

Giacomini isn’t making the same money as Bushrod — $3.5 million in 2013 in the second year of a two-year deal — but he started all of the 2012 season at right tackle for a team most think has a legit shot at a Super Bowl this year. In 2012, he ranked second in the league in blown blocks with 33, behind Indy’s Anthony Castonzo. Only Dallas’ Doug Free had more penalties than Giacomini’s 13, and no player in the NFL had more penalty yards than his 130. Pete Carroll loves tough guys, but he’s also obsessed with extending drives on a consistent basis. Giacomini would not seem to be the ideal fit in the long term.

Yeah, what about Giacomini's run blocking compared to those other guys? Most of the criticism of Breno I read doesn't address his run blocking for a run first team.

Also, I wouldn't call Breno overrated at all, he is barely rated to begin with. He stays healthy, is a good run blocker, and he has the right mix of nasty for Cable.

Giaco was our best option at RT when we stuck him in there.

He still is, and I see a very less penalized version this year.

Stats don't show toughness, and I'll take toughness over some performance skewed statistics.

Remind me... who exactly is overrating Giacomini?

Seems like as many people criticise him as celebrate him.

Might as well just put any random starter on this list.

"Toughness" is all well and good, but executing blocks while avoiding penalties is even better. Breno is not overrated; he's one of the least effective starting OT's in the league and everybody knows it. *Overpaid* is the list he should be on.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised by the blown block number (he was a bit of a turnstile vs. Chris Long in week 17) but it does seem like Giacomini (minus the penalties) is the best RT we've had in a while. That's damning with faint praise, but the point is, we could definitely do worse, especially if Breno can continue his late 2012 penalty moderation.

On that note, every single offensive lineman that Cable has brought in since coming here has had slow feet. The only exception is Sweezy, who played DT in college. Cable loves to coach up lumbering thumpers. Even the guy they were interested in and didn't draft, Jordan Mills, was a lumbering thumper. Don't be shocked if Giacomini's successor at RT is equally as stiff in pass pro, that is unless it's Bailey who gets the job. Bailey is stiff laterally, but unlike Giacomini and McQuistan he has the the arm length to compensate.

Breno played mostly penalty-free after he was benched in the Miami (I think?) game. I saw a vast difference last year in the 2nd half and most people don't mention it. I think he may have turned a corner.

I wonder how many non-Seahawks fans know who Breno Giacomini is. I'd guess not many.

And yet he's one of the top two most overrated tackles in the NFL?

Whatever.

His personal foul last week says different.

The nasty streak is what sets the tone for our offense and is the unspoken warning that we protect our own, how many here think Dockett joking Wilson would not go un noticed by this offensive line vs the Hasselbeck joke and the line reaction.

He reduced his penaltys of aggression a lot after his benching, his value isn't just his run blocking.

FWIW, I didn't agree with that call. The play was clearly still alive when Breno engaged the defender. It was away from the play so maybe there is a rule I am not aware of, but it wasn't a late hit, at least. And if they flag guys for being physical away from the play, then **** Roger Goodell.

I said "mostly" penalty-free. Not that he would never be flagged again. He has significantly cut down on the penalties when you compare the first half of last year to the second.

If Breno's the weakest link on your o'line, then you're doing ok. If he's the best, then you're in trouble. I wouldn't mind upgrading that position, but in the mean time i'm not uncomfortable with the dude playing there.

Good way of putting it, also, I can't really name many RT so as long as the guy isn't a complete disaster then meh, who cares. With Wilson, interior play is going to be more important anyway.

I guess we better be looking to replace Okung also, he has lost a step and had a holding penalty last game as well.

That call was BOGUS. He decleated a guy within the context of the play. It was technically clean. The only crime was he sent the dude ass over tea-kettle. He flew and the ref threw a flag out of reflex.

It was a message sender too. Something that Tom and Pete had to smile over.

Putting him on this list is very odd.

Not over rated at all. Could we do better? Abso-friggin-lutely, but the guy is a beast run blocker and he plays his heart out for us.

Needs to chill on the damned penaltys this year though or I jump on the hate-wagon.
