Which part of his stat line would you say was terrible?
Tebow completed 75% of his passes with the Jets and was pulled, Clearly the NFL does not care about stats when giving out jobs.

Geno is a massive risk! Once a team learns to get some defenders deep, its all over. Geno over throws on just about all of his incompletions.

I think the point that was being made is that Genos performance was not 'terrible '. Not overwhelming in any way? Sure. Not a difference maker? Sure. Not full of spectacular moments? Agreed. But in his 1st 2 starts he was asked to play a certain way, likely because they were trying to shift the focus of the offense to the run game and limit his exposure. In his last game, where even Shane and Pete have said he was for the first time on the same page with his OC, he played significantly better. But in a rather negative and myopic view of what played out, that game is tossed out as though it didn't even happen because it was against the Jags.

Do I think Geno is the long-term answer as Qb for this team? NO. But I also don't think hes terrible, or that our season is over and we are a 4 win team if he has to start. If thats the case, hed actually be subtracting wins from a roster that is capable of more than that.

He won 8 games in his rookie season with the Jets. And two years later his head coach was fired for how terrible he at preparing the team. The Jets have been bad for a long time, save for a brief period where Mark Sanchez played well and they had Favre.

Same goes for Lock. In the system that most closely resembles what we run and with coaches that mentor him the way ours have, he came in as a rookie and won 4 games at the end of the season.

Both qbs had much worse second years, but in each case, there are circumstances beyond simply their ability thatbcontributed to their overall team not playing well and in Locks case with Covid, he himself not benefiting from a solid offseason if prep.

So yes, they both COULD suck here. They both have played poorly in the past. Theyve also both shown the potential to play better.
Which they'll be here remains to be seen, but it's only if you take the worst possible outcome given each of their PAST performances that you can arrive at a conclusion that this team won't do anything this year.

True.

Overstatement coupled with irresponsible use of adjectives ("horrible," "trash," "bust," top-tier, GOAT, best-ever,) is often the language of the lazy; we end up arguing over the definition of vague descriptors for too long.

Smith is terrible. Just watch him play. He gives you zero chance to win unless you are playing the Jags or the Lions. A good back up should net you a 50% win rate. Geno? 25%.

On an 8 pass sample size, and was otherwise a complete arm punter who didn't so much as complete half his passes for his career.

Not 8 games. 8 passing attempts. That's the sample.

Do not bring Tebow into this, as he's wholly irrelevant and possibly the worst passer to ever start more than one game in the modern NFL.

So there are people here who really liked what they saw from Geno last year? I guess as long as his stat line isn’t a mess, who cares that he misses open WR, and we lose games.

Six completions out of eight attempts for a grand total of 39 yards, 23 of which came on one play, and with two sacks thrown in for good measure. Yes, Tebow was sacked on 20% of his dropbacks that season. See how a small sample (75% completion rate! Oh, but in eight attempts) can cut both ways?

For a measure of how productive Tebow was as a QB in his 75%-completion-rate season, he put up an ANY/A of 3.20, which is atrocious. To be fair to Tebow, the ANY/A Tebow put up in his larger sample with the Broncos was 5.27, which is... also not even close to good. The average in the NFL in 2011 was 5.9, as it was in 2012, the season you held up as Tebow producing and not getting a fair shake.

Tebow not getting an NFL starting job again after 2012 was not some kind of injustice. He was a bad QB.

He fed DK reasonably well and showed improvement over time. Yeah, he did decently in backup relief. Showed serious stuff on his 98 yard drive against the Rams and the majority of the Jacksonville game. Unfortunately, he didn't have a crazed Penny to feed off of.

You're probably right about that, but Tebow will forever hold a place in my heart as the guy who torched the Steelers in overtime and bumped them out of the playoffs when he was playing for the Broncos.

Imagine spending the rest of eternity knowing your playoff team was beaten by Tebow. (And Tebow really did beat them. He connected on a pass that went to the house. In overtime.)

If only it was just about the adjective.

Maybe Geno will be serviceable.
I would rather either Rick Mirer or Stan Gelbaugh but to each his own.

We know exactly what we will look like with Geno at QB because we experienced it last year. It wasn't great.

He isn't going to help us win much but probably won't outright lose games for us either. The most likely outcome is that he will look like a backup playing starter, which is what he is.

Football GOD must smiled on Geno last season, he was 5 TDs and 1 INT in 3.5 games. PFF gave him a 73.5 rating. If you don't believe in the mightiness of football GOD, then Geno might just have matured or improved or better supporting cast helped?

By the way, Geno played 3.5 games last season, how did you get the 25%? So he won 0.875 games? Hawks were behind Rams when he took over, he almost pulled that one off if Tyler didn't slip. Do you really want to credit Geno for that "L" of Rams game?
