The Chiefs already had Patrick Mahomes and had been developing him for over a year when they got rid of Alex Smith.

It's actually kind of funny that you brought that up because that's pretty much what most people labeled "pro Geno" have been saying they want. An actual plan in place to replace Geno with a better option as opposed to just kicking Geno to the curb and then trying to figure out where to go from there.

So draft a QB and don’t extend Geno?

So draft a QB and don’t extend Geno?

That depends on their assessments of Sam Howell, their assessments of the QB's available in the draft, and their assessments of the QB's available via FA or possibly even a trade. I really don't know what the answer is nor have I ever claimed to. All I've been saying is that I don't think it's prudent to move on from Geno until there's some sort of a plan in place to replace him with a better option. Sorry, but I don't think "I just want to get rid of Geno and I don't care if that makes us worse because it's possible we might get better" is a solid plan.

The answer is release Geno, Draft Milroe (or someone else) Play Howell and let draftee learn then you have double the chance of a long term QB instead of old man Geno and a rookie. Plus cap space for the lines. Howell is on the last year of his deal too.

So, full disclosure, I'm not on X/Twitter, instagram, or any of that other stuff, and I don't watch or listen to podcasts, sports radio, or whatever other content may be out there. I really don't know anything about Corbin Smith other than apparently he's a host on a Seahawks podcast. Point being, I don't know if this guy is a source of reliable information or not.

That being said, there was just a short clip on the news (Q13) where Corbin Smith said that the Seahawks could save up to $23 million against the cap this year by extending Geno which would allow the Seahawks to make other significant moves (like re-signing Ernest Jones), and also that the Seahawks want Geno here for the next several years, that the entire organization is sold on Geno whether the fans are or not, and that he believes Geno will be extended before the start of free agency.

Sorry, no link because I don't know how to provide a link for something I saw on the news.

His cap hit is what $40m for next year and he wants an extension. Those two facts don't play well together with a one year draft and develop.
I understand his cap hit is $44m but if we cut him the dead money is $13m so in effect keeping Geno costs $30m.

The alternatives are another proven starting level QB like Darnold for $45-$50. A back-up that we hope we can turn into a starter like we did with Geno (though Geno had been with the team for years so we knew exactly what we had) or a Rookie that is available to us in a weak year for QBs when we pick at 18 with no time to develop and what is likely to still be a very weak O-line to pretect him (especially is the QB is taken in the first round).

I see mock drafts where he goes as high as #1. Even ignoring the fact that JS is not the guy I would bet on to move up in the 1st I think it's highly unlikely we have the capital to get there or that that would be the smartest move considering all of our other needs.

I was thinking more on the lines around the 8 to 10 mark, but i'm probably wrong.

Tennessee, Cleveland, and the NY Giants have the top 3 picks. All 3 of them need QB's. There's absolutely no way Ward makes it past the 3rd pick, and I personally don't think he makes past Cleveland at #2.

We have the 18th pick. In 2021 it cost the 9ers 3 firsts and a 3rd to move up from #12 to #3 to take Trey Lance. Moving up from #18 into the top 3 would almost certainly cost more than that, and there's no guarantee that we get Ward unless we trade up to #1.

Is that something that you think the Seahawks should do? Do you really think Ward is worth not having another 1st round pick until 2028 (plus who knows how much else)?

For me personally, I'm not convinced Ward is the next Jayden Daniels type young super star QB, and if I'm not convinced of that, I don't make that trade. The cost is just way too high, imo.

No, I totally agree with you that he's basically unobtainable to us, but if for some miracle it did happen, he's the only QB in the draft I feel could instantly make Seattle better than they currently are and that's a stretch on my part.

You are 100% correct. I been posting it but people don’t know how the cap works. If we extend Geno he doesn’t make $44.5 million in 2025. Much closer to $30, maybe as low as $26 million. Then add incentives so he gets his money still.

Hey, plenty of people don't know how the cap works. I have no problem admitting that I'm always asking about the cap etc. I semi understand it, but there's people on here who do a hell of a job breaking it down.

These numbers have been shared in the past...

130 QBs have been taken in round 1.
61 have won a playoff game.

Drafting a QB is a 50/50 shot at best (numbers go down in lower round picks and some of those winning QBs didn't win a playoff game until their second team). I just think it needs to be added to the conversation: the team is just as likely to waste a 1st round draft pick as win a playoff game using it on a QB. JS has to be sold on a prospect to take him and it could cost his job if he's wrong. So "should" "could" "might" "will" ... only matters if JS is saying it.

Personally, I find it more enjoyable and less anxiety inducing when I'm able to get excited about the anticipation as opposed to committing to a single path and inevitably being disappointed when it plays out differently.

Except that's not what the Pro-Geno crowd as been saying. They say fix everything else and extend Geno. I guarantee many of those guys if Seattle used a first round pick on a QB would be upset because you're not fixing the problems you had if you go that route. That's the breakdown. You need to probably spend a high pick to get a QB but if you do that, you're losing resources you need to fix the problems that are supposedly holding Geno back from greatness. Can you do both? Maybe but its tough.

So you're good being the 4th longest streak in the NFC to make it to the conference championship game and having no playoff wins in years because hey we win 8-10 games a year. That's fine but for many it's not. We want to be a playoff team and compete. I don't want a Seattle Mariners situation which is what Seattle has slipped into since Russ left and even little before.

If drafting a QB is a 50/50 bet what is Geno who has never won a playoff game then?

The Geno is our best option vs we really need to draft a QB catch 22.

The only "stat" that matters is wins and losses, especially in the playoffs. Those 2 have already done WAY more than Geno ever has or ever will.

I'd like to see the record vs. teams over .500 with these 3 QB's. Meanwhile, Hurts has a ring and really should have 2 rings in 3 years.
Stats are so massively overrated. Geno being good between the 20's, can't beat great teams, no playoff wins, panics under pressure, esp. in the Red Zone. Congrats.

Thats not what "pro Geno" has been saying at all. Draft someone who you like wherever that may be. Extend Geno while developing a QB drafted unless they really believe in Howell or Hall which I don't think they do. I have not seen anyone say don't take someone in the first at QB. I may have missed some pages but I haven't seen it. You should always take BPA, if that's a QB I'm all for it. The biggest issue is as fans we read mock drafts and go off what is considered BPA. Teams have their own BPA's/draft boards. They don't always align.

Back to the point, I haven't seen anyone say extend Geno and we are set at QB, don't touch the position which is what it sounds like you are implying.

There are 4 options with Geno.
1) Do nothing and he costs you $44.5 million next year. Nobody wants that except Geno and his agent.
2) Cut Geno before March 16th (that's when his current cap for next year becomes guaranteed. 4 days after FA starts and 1 1/2 months before the draft) but then you are stuck forcing another need on this team that isn't one piece away but one good draft and FA can fix. (see Eagles last year)
3) Trade Geno - see #2 but add that you need a trade partner.
4) Extend Geno, lowers cap significantly. Draft a successor to learn for anywhere from 1-3 years however long until they feel comfortable moving forward, hopefully this year but it doesn't force your hand to do it this year. Time is running out on that though. Can still add good players in FA, top of the market type while still putting a competitive team on the field.

I've seen the pro Geno crowd 100% of the time choose option 4.
