UPDATE:

Claimed former Ram CB Derion Kendrick
Claimed former 49rr LB Chazz Surratt
Signed former Ram LB Chris Paul Jr.

I see that we signed nearly all the guys that were in camp. On one hand I’m glad to see guys back that I liked. On the other hand, I worry that no one else wanted them.

Having guys on the practice squad that have been through training camp with the team is a natural advantage because they can more easily step up if needed to replace some one else who made the team. Much better than scrounging around for street free agents to plug holes. Most coaches and teams will feel this way, which is why the retention rate for guys passing waivers is so high, something like 90-95%.

Looking around the league, teams aren't cutting premium players to sneak them onto the practice squad very often.

It's the practice squad, so you would expect a bunch of not-quite ready players to be stashed there. These are not our second stringers, but our WIP players. Unless someone has a need (Like LB depth for us) or really liked a draft pick that got cut (Chris Paul) poaching players from waivers isn't like getting blue chip players late in the draft.

I'd be curious if anyone has examples of PS players that went on to start in the league. I think we had some people called up for spot starts due to injuries, but nobody that made the jump to full-time starter.

I’d take this practice squad against all other 31 practice squads.

This practice squad is second to none. Loaded with talent top to bottom. And I’m not even joking. I like all these guys.

I respectfully disagree. When the players you cut are being claimed and some that aren't claimed end up on other teams' PS - then you had a lot of depth. If your cuts aren't being claimed and aren't making other teams' PS - well, not so much.

The Seahawks have 3 RBs on the PS. It isn't because they're good. It's because they have potential. If the Seahawks had an injury at RB before Week 1 they'd likely sign someone from another team's PS rather than promote their own guy.

My question is how far away is a D Martinez from being a legit 53 man roster guy. ( For example)

Was he or is he truly just a project or could he step in at some point this season if (when) one or more of our RB get injured ? wouldn't it be easier to promote a player who knows the offensive verbage etc.. than being in an unknown ?

I have a feeling he'll improve and he might still be a little beat up from NCAA. And Holani ran like greased freaking lightning, that didn't help Martinez .

The whole strategy behind the practice squad has changed immensely since 20 years ago. For one, it is much larger than before. Most important, though, is the ability of a team to call up a guy from the PC temporarily for individual games or a short stretch to cover for a hole in the roster or to face a certain opponent and not sign him to the 53 unless you want to add him "permanently."

Keep in mind that these guys are not just sitting around sipping sodas. They are actively practicing with the rest of the team. They probably don't get a lot of reps with the 1s, but they are working and drilling with the whole team, and thus can be called up with the reasonable expectation that they are not completely lost on the field.

In some respects, it's a bit like baseball, with their 40 man roster with only 26 "active" players and another 14 in the lower levels who can be called up on a moment's notice.

Rating players by their risk of being poached by other teams in not wrong in itself. More imporantly, they should be rated by their abilities they showcased in training camp working with their team. Obviously, our coaches liked the guys the brought back on the PC enough to continue working with them for future possibilities.

The Seahawks have 3 RBs and 2 FBs ahead of him. (I liked Holani more last year than I did Martinez this year). Then there's McIntosh, and i'd sign Schrader from the Rams PS before i'd sign Martinez. Without being rude the Seahawks don't put an emphasis on a RB being able to block or being able to line up in the slot and run a route tree. In a pure rushing RB role Wright might also be ahead of him, just on physicality and speed.

Martinez is a project. He should improve, but at this point I haven't seen anything to demonstrate even a niche role for him. Not every Draft pick works out, and that's ok. It's also ok to use the PS for development, but it does leave you thin at some positions.

I like seeing three nose tackle on the practice ready squad. Zero technique and zero shade is a role that will likely only see 40% of the snaps or less. So elevating from the ready squad on a week to week bases makes good use of the ready roster. I like that J.R. Singleton is included as a bit of a change up for appropriate match ups along the way. Obvious special teams potential as well. It's all about week to week match ups and extracting the most from rosters.

  • NT J.R. Singleton
  • NT Quinton Bohanna
  • NT Brandon Pili
