Fairly good summary/state of the union article.

We need disruptive is right. But man, so many offensive things need fixed, I don't see us doing that in one year. A top level QB that can take over games is a dream, but not gonna happen anytime soon.
Go hard on OL and keep Gemo around unless something pops up in the off-season. And Grubb, I'm fine with a suitable replacement. That might be our best bet to being disruptive.

It's a great writeup. Rob's one of about 3 people covering the Hawks that thinks about vision, opportunity cost, and the long term--within the context of players that are likely to be available.

I have a higher opinion of Laumea than Rob does. I think he's the right guard moving forward. And it lessens the stink of Haynes seeming unlikely to live up to draft status. To my eye, he's already the best up-field/pulling guard we've had in a while. Probably since Sweezy. Big win.

He needs to get stronger. For sure. But find me a rookie guard that you can't say that about. Especially one drafted after the 2nd round.

A big investment in left guard should be made. I can't even imagine a reasonable argument where that isn't the case. If the Hawks see a guy in the first two rounds that looks like a future all pro, and has the toughness and attitude they want, go get them. "Go" as in be aggressive.

I'd trade Metcalf to get that pick if I was confident in that guard. I think we know what Metcalf is. He's good. But if he was going to become that ultimate, physical receiver that comes down with 80% of jump/body-up balls, he would have by now. He has yet to improve from his second year in the league, which is four years ago.

Probably, they should look at centers, too.

Olu is a cerebral player that doesn't make a lot of mistakes, but he's not in the top few tiers of centers. Can he get better and provide stability? I don't know. He gets pushed around a lot. If the guards next to him were both very good, it might not be a problem.

Cross has regressed a lot over the course of the season. It's probably the biggest concern to me. At this moment, it's not an easy call as to whether you resign him, exercise the 5th-year option, or let him test the market in a couple of years. I think he's second-worst in the league for pressures given up, and he's pretty much been the worst over the last 7 games.

Well put. MOST of Geno's problem is Grubbs bullshit playcalling - it's killing him.

Give him a couple extra clicks on the OL and he's doing what he did the past couple seasons, or better.

I agree with you.

JS is only on the hot seat here, the place where people have a massive fetish for firing people like this is a reality TV contest show and not a professional football organization.
Um, have to say 'nope' on this one.

JS is responsible for the Oline mess that we have always been in, and other personnel decisions also, since the early Russ days. He's said so in the press and in public SEVERAL times. When Pete was here he could hide behind the 'partnership'. He's the one that said that the OL is 'overpaid and overrated'. He said that shit. Out loud. While milking and serving up a shitty overall offense.

That's not knee jerk reactions. That's the truth.

That shit is ON HIM. He needs to fix it or go.

I would like to see much more Bill B attitude and far less namby pamby. MM has it right, and in my opinion is going in the right direction. HE's that one that gets another season. Bench or fire the non-believers. He's just needed a season to find out where the boat's leaking. He knows now. And, he's not afraid to cut players and/or discipline them (as we've seen recently). He's about all we got goin' right around here right now.

JS is probably safe, but absolutely should be on the hot seat. The offense is a dumpster fire and it's all his doing.
THIS. And Grubb. But I'd be astonished at this point if Grubb was here next season.

Astonished.

Sorry to say, I think this take is just another example of this place and its myopic view that firing people leads to the results they want.

Did you read the dot net poll on Grubb? Most will rather cut Geno before firing Grubb.

Next season with Geno gone, Grubb will focus on working with San Howell without distruptions.

What DOES John have to do for his supporters to change their minds about him? Still have a shit o line next year? Still have a shit o line for the next 2 years? Run it back with GeNooo next year and the year after because a QB didn't magically fall to us in the draft? Use more 2nd round picks on running backs?

Laumea has been butt yet he has been given a ton of opportunities. the same wasn't afforded to Haynes.

We may have to assume that coaches have more confidence in Laumea than Haynes, which means Haynes had problems during practice?

I’m of the hope that both of these guys will be quality players going forward. What’s the median learning curve for offensive linemen? Two, three years? Along with Bradford, do these three or any one of them have the requisite skill sets to be fully functional offensive linemen? Are they just lacking NFL experience?

Why do you care his supporters change their minds? They have as much say in the matter as everyone else here, ZERO.

If enough fans start demanding better than this dumpster fire of an offensive line that we've had to deal with over the past decade plus, it could absolutely have an impact.

Right like Jake Curhan…
