What great team or part of a team doesn't have a nickname? Truly magnificent units are remembered and those names live on in NFL history.

Legion of Boom

Greatest Show On Turf

The Steel Curtain

The Purple People Eaters

Monsters of Midway

The Hogs

Just to name a few all time greats! However, I feel that sometimes attempt to create a name, or these teams PR units try to create in a lab but they fail to ever stick.

I remember two that were being passed around in media but never amounted to anything and that was;

The Legion of Zoom - This was attempted by the Chiefs around when Mahomes came onto the team and their offense was electric. No one to this day uses this name and thank god, it was lazy.

The Extra Degree - I remember back in the 2006 Divisional Round, Seattle v Chicago, going "The Extra Degree" I think was Chicago's attempt to have their own 12th Man like shtick but after the game it was never uttered again.

What's your favorite or what do you got?

Although it wasn’t a failed name, I never thought the Orange Crush was that great of a Defense.

Since we are talking about unit nick names , I was always fond of the fearsome foursome. They were well before my time, but my Dad went to school with Merlin Olsen, so I think it’s cool.

I also thought the “New York Sack Exchange” was cool when I was a kid in the 80’s. (Jet’s). Seeing Mark Gastineau do his thing after sacks is something I vividly remember. Joe Klecko was a beast too. I’m too lazy to google the other lineman on that team.

I thought The New York Sack Exchange was clever too. Klecko owned the Golds gym by me back in the 90's. Cool guy

Most suggestions from fans I've heard over the years have been pretty lame. The best ones come organically, usually from the players and/or the talking heads that report on the team on a daily basis. Frankly, I never thought Legend of Boom was all that. 🤷‍♂️

One I always liked was Bruise Brothers, the San Diego Chargers Dline. The Hogs from Washington. And how about Ground Chuck?
I also remember the paper bags for the Aint's...lol

D00d, I'm sure you meant the Legion of Boom, 'cause @TheLegendOfBoom is our friend!

The problem with this exercise is that they're failed nicknames, so no one remembers them. I'm sure there have been plenty, but I can hardly remember the successful nicknames, and definitely not the failed ones.

For failed player nicknames, I think "Sheriff" for Peyton Manning didn't really stick, and for Russ, his attempts to call himself "Mr. Unlimited" or "Dangeruss" never took hold.

High tide......High tide...
LOL

Anyone else notice that some of the “players” coming out of the bus in that commercial look like they’re in their mid 40’s. Attention to detail for the love of God.

I had to go through years of horrible nicknames here in Indiana.
The Seachickens or Seahags..
2006 is about when that really started ending..
Nowadays nobody dares anymore.
I felt like I should share this ..

Am I the only one here who didn't love LOB? It never made much sense to me. I never disliked it enough to complain, but it just never did much for me.

Do you understand the pun? A lot the great team nicknames were pun based, like the afformentioned Purple People Eaters, Steel Curtain, Greatest Show on Turf and yes, Legion of Boom. As a matter of fact, I'd argue Legion of Boom is the last great NFL nickname. Nothing as good or organic has come since.
