Hasn’t the argument all these years been that Pete doesn’t seem to trust Russ enough? That he continuously handcuffs Russ? That belief gained even more momentum in the 2018 Cowboys game, and last year when Russ’ “struggles” was purely a case of extremely conservative Pete ball. Instead of believing in his QB like so many other coaches believe in theirs (See Brandon Staley, McVay, Andy Reid, Kingsbury, McDermott for reference)
Yes, Carroll does have issues trusting his signal callers, or rather he cares about the toxic differential above all else. That is fine and dandy when you're fielding a good defense, but we haven't had those in ages.
This offense is the most extreme version of this mentality. Some possessions we ran three times in a row and punted. We also reached out to Cam Newton and Blake Bortles before. You don't do that if you have complete confidence in your backup QB.
