I wonder how much control Russ has on offensive play calls? I mean his primary reason for leaving the Hawks was to get more control. Assuming he has Tom Brady type control, how come Hackett got all the blame?

Because Hackett costs a lot less and his salary doesn't count against the salary cap. The Broncos could get rid of Hackett. They are stuck with Wilson.

Late in the very first game of the season, Hackett was already getting blamed by the national media for things that were clearly not his fault. He sent in a fourth-down go-for-it play on the Broncos' last drive, and Wilson's teammates were clearly waiting for him to call the signal to start the play, some even looking back to see what the hell he was doing. But Wilson 🐔 chickened out. It wasn't an attempt to draw the Seahawks offside, because Wilson didn't even attempt the "hard count." When the Broncos called time out with the play clock expiring, Wilson went to the sideline and straight toward the bench. He made no attempt at all to talk to Hackett and argue for going for it, like you'd expect somebody who "lives for" such moments to do. And then, after Carroll called a time out to "ice" the kicker  (and the Broncos took a practice kick, which should have been a penalty), Wilson had even more time to discuss a possible go-for-it play with Hackett, but made no effort at all to do so. And then all the national media jumped on Hackett for having his kicker attempt a 64-yard field goal at sea level. Pay no attention to the yellow Quarter-Billion-Dollar Man. It's Hackett's fault, they all declared, and what a terrible decision! Never mind the talk of Wilson going to Denver being not about the money, but about "control." Never mind that instead of a normal coach-player relationship, they said they had a "partnership." No, no, no. That only applied when they thought the Broncos were going to win a lot of games and make noise in the playoffs. When things went wrong starting in the first game, it was all Hackett's fault, and Saint Russell the Blameless escaped scot-free.

Edited to add: once the Broncos had played several games and the Wilson-led offense continued to suck, a lot of the national media caught on that without Carroll's protection (derisively called "Peteball" by Wilson fans), Wilson isn't a top-75%-of-the-league QB, much less a top-tier QB. But they didn't stop giving Hackett a sizeable portion of the blame for the utter suckitude of the Wilson-led offense.

If they can get a competent coach, they could get it turned around next year. They had 20 players on IR this season.

True, but the most you can expect is to rely on the injury returns to build around Russ. It’s like everyone thinks 2020 Russ can return, but he physically can’t.

That may be true. I don’t know.

Fields’ passing failures have been lifted by his Lamar like rushing ability. That it at least something to work with as the team continues to build around him.

Russells good points by contrast have disappeared.

That’s probably right. There is article by Doug Farrar on how to “fix” Wilson. Basically, he needs to work with the new coach to change his style of play. Can the old dog learn some new tricks? We’ll see.

Great insights. I wonder why Russ didn't take the blame if it was his doing for the field goal try? If it was me and somebody else took the blame, I would feel so bad/guilty.

I see this as an easy hire, one that will return the Broncos to their former glory. Why not go with the smartest man in the room?
Russell Wilson, player/coach..
He might even forgo the coach salary, he is a give back kind of guy...!

If Wilson is Narcist or Delusional he would have wanted to be the hero like he does everytime. Coming back from injury before he was ready last season. Going for deep balls and not for easy first downs. I dont think Wilson is "yellow" he truly believes he can win all the time by playing and making the big plays. Game is not over until it hits zero, that's the time of player i've watch for a decade.

Watching the Broncos play, their confidence in Wilson slowly dwindle. Until they no longer believe in him and now tuned him out. I guess that happens when you continue to lose. I think the injuries truly made a difference especially the RB. Javante Williams was ranked the 3rd best RB beginning of the season. They were 2-1 before his injury. Then you ended up getting Melvin Gordon who possibley cost them several games w/ his continuous costly fumbles. 3 of 4 starting WR were injured throughout the season. They haven't had a consistent o-line this season. Way too many variable to think Wilson is washed.
