I suspect the team wanted to keep Sweezy but couldn't agree as to the $.
He's a $4 million cap hit this year and $5.5 million next year for the Cards, so that wouldn't be surprising. He made just under $2 million last year, which included a $500,000 incentive, started 15 games, and was a seemingly good contributor of a much improved group. I'd consider that someone who was brought back to the team who was successful.
McGruff is right in that generally when you bring back players who have gone other places it doesn't work out well. It has happened, but the players are generally older and more beat up by the time you get them back.
But if you bring in somebody like McDonald and it's reasonably inexpensive because you don't have the talent at the spot, and they know how to work within the team/system, it can work. I wouldn't call Maxwell's return really successful, but he also served a decent purpose when injuries kicked in for not a lot of money.
