It appears that Harbaugh is going to try to install a 1997 Nebraska Cornhusker type offense.
I'm not sure that is going to be very effective in the current NFL. Add that to the fact that their roster is down on talent - at least on the Offensive side - have a gimpy Herbert - and it looks bleak for the Chargers
One thing for certain is that it will be fantastic to watch Harbs blow up on the sidelines every week. It is one of my favorite activities.
Lets take a deeper look at the Chargers roster and lets start with the offense:
Palmer is always a deep threat up the seem as a pro and nothing has changed regarding what I have seen from him. Throw in the rookie McConkey who should have been drafted much higher. Chark is okay but nothing to write home about as a WR. And they have high hopes for Johnston. WR is obviously not the strength of the offense but they have enough versatile pieces to threaten underneath and over the top. I can not emphasize enough how Palmer is sneaky good at attacking a seem with go or post routes.
Now at TE they have Dissly and Hurst where both are sneaky good as pass catchers. For an offense that will be all about play action they will be involved in a lot of the offensive scheme.
Edwards/Dobbins are going to grind out yards as that is what they are grinders and that is what Harbaugh wants.
Herbert was already playing in vanilla style offenses before the arrival of Harbaugh but I think that new OC Roman is going to throw in wrinkles that Herbert has not been able to show case as a pro so far.
That offensive line on paper is the Chef's Kiss and maybe the Patriots should have drafted Alt over Maye.
Defensively, their front seven if they stay healthy is going to be very ferocious. Meanwhile their secondary has always been uber talented but that defensive front has to try to do more.
Overall the Chargers are more talented than people think as ex GM Telesco didn't leave the cupboard bare. However, the Chargers due to cap realities were not able to churn the roster as much as Harbaugh probably want to do. But that is okay because it allows them a season to evaluate he existing talent under the new coaching staff.
