So I spent last night watching Harvin plays. He has more routes inside 5 yards than I have seen from anybody else. The effect it has when he is in the slot is fun to watch.
San Francisco got all messed up by Harvin. It ruined their pass rush. Knowing 28 is back there definitely is part of the deal, but SF did this thing where all their DL stood up for about half the game. They got so focused on stopping Percy's short routes that he got over the top, and the single coverage the other receivers got was taken advantage of. (Aromashadu and Simpson suck, but had really good games against the Niners)
We do not have a true number 1 receiver. Sidney and Golden cannot defeat double teams by themselves or even command them with regularity just based on their own abilities, but with Harvin we will see them have some truly great games. Harvin will impact our 3rd down game the most. Defenses cannot sit on the sticks on 3rd and long because Harvin is so damn fast he can turn a 2 yard flare into a 10 yard gain if you give him that 3rd down safety cushion. They will have to pay attention to him with a corner and safety, and that will give 3 guys opportunities to get good looks on 3rd and long.
Lynch and Turbin will benefit too. We will see other teams going nickel a lot more, taking size off the field. safeties are going to slide before or after the snap to take away a Harvin zone, killing two deep coverage. Tate and Rice are at their best when playing that single high safety, and Russell is always looking for that big play.
Another benefit: Golden Tate is also at his best after the catch. Some of these loop routes that Harvin runs on WR and smoke screens are incredible at creating space inside 5 yards. Learning these will be really good for Golden too.
