Unless this kid grows a ton in the off season he will never be anything but a situational pass rusher. he has none of the run stopping skills Clemons has. He had a good season but he is very limited. We need an every down guy. We need a INTERIOR pass rush. Biggest need in the offseason.

The line plays a role in the pass rush, I don't think he was a reach at all, I think the line needs some improvements so that he can do his thing. We are currently more built for run defense with no speed, I think we need to build a hybrid line like St Louis to stop the run and be quick from the inside, that will make Bruce more effective.

He IS a situational pass rusher and was drafted as such. In a limited role he produced, how is that a reach?

8 sacks as a situational pass rusher, sure was a reach. First game starting and he didn't do quite as well, no body on that defense played well. He wasn't a reach, i'd take him 100x again over Coples or Ingram, maybe not Jones though.

Just because Aldon Smith became a force (thanks to Justin Smith) doesn't mean every rookie DE is going to come into the league and make hay. Irvin will continue to work and develop.

In addtion, the thing you have to remember about Aldon Smith is that he didn't have his breakout season until his Sophomore year. I think he only had 3 or 4 sacks his rookie year. How often do defensive rookies come into the league and make a consistent difference? I still have high hopes for him. He will work and develop for sure.

The NFL has become..... situational football

i would like to tsee the stat on QB pressures, that is a more telling stat than sacks...how many times the qb forced a bad throw or had to account for him

Isn't it time for the doom and gloom bandwagoners to go back into hiding?

How can you be a doom and gloom bandwagoner? Aren't those two separate concepts?

It's not Irvin. He won't be an every down DE, but he will improve.

What we desperately need is a pocket collapser! That will make our edge guys way more effective.

calling a rookie player a reach after one season in which he led all rookies in sacks

is a reach.

Randy Starks?

And if so, how much would the Hawks have to spend for him?

He is perfectly suited for the Raheem Brock pass rush specialist role. If he plays that position for years and gets 8-15 sacks a year on obvious passing downs, I would call that a successful draft pick.

But it is clear that he cannot be a 3 down player on the D Line. He is not big enough and frankly, not good enough at other areas of the game.

Hindsight is 20/20. Wilson was taken in the 3rd and played like a 1st rounder. Irvin was taken mid 1st round and played like a late 1st round rookie. Add to that how solid BWagz has been and I can't complain about our draft at all.

That's not true. He had 14 sacks as rookie and 19.5 as a 2nd year player.

His 2nd year will be huge. Remember a couple years back the G-Men take Jason Peirre Paul (right around the same pick as Irvin) He was called a reach because he was an athlete, but was raw. His first year he has 6.5 sacks. His 2nd year he exploded to 16.5 sacks.

I would expect Irvin to pack on 5 more pounds of muscle and to really develop in his 2nd year. 9 sacks for a rookie (including playoffs- is pretty darn good).
