This commissioner's office is now officially toothless, they'll have to replace Goodell now.

I don't think the owners will replace Goodell, as he's still delivering them dump truck's full of money every year............but they will circle the wagons on reviewing how discipline is handled.

IMO the NFL needs to come up with some sort of disciplinary committee, and do away with Goodell's unilateral no rhyme or reason way of handing out punishment.

I agree on both counts. The decision is disappointing but not unexpected in my opinion.

I think this was the main issue all along. It was secondary that the league could not prove Brady was guilty.

Anyone that supports unions should be thrilled at this, the player's union are starting to win something.

The worst part about this ruling is now the Pats fans have come out from the rocks they were hiding under to inform us that a "storm is coming" and that storm is Tom Brady.

Good.

Goodell took a 1/10 and ramped it up into a 9/10 that lasted 8 months and went right up to a week before the season starts (and now he'll probably drag it out further). Goodell has been overreaching and acting unilaterally far too often, and I'm glad he's getting embarrased like this. Players now know that they have power and rights and are entitled to a fair process in the courts, beyond the CBA.

I look at the inflation levels of footballs similarly to curves on hockey sticks - you get caught with an illegal curve it is a 5 minute penalty. It's utterly ridiculous that it went this far.

Looking forward to him carving up the Steelers week 1 and later on the Colts who are the rats who set this whole thing in motion.

Just play football.

Who cares. His reputation is forever tarnished. It'll be a focus of every tribute and reflection feature ever made about him - "Do you feel that the Spygate and Deflategate events blur your accomplishments?"

This part is true. You even hear retired players comment on TV about this on a regular basis. A while back they were asking about the greatest QB's of all time and several former players said you can't put him up there because he had to "Cheat" to win. So he won one round, but long term he loses in the most important arena's of the fans and players.

The last part is how the writers will look at him when he retires and they start to decide on "IF" he deserves to go in with the baggage he would bring to the Hall of Fame.

Goodell's only defense is that he is consistently inconsistent.

Hey kids, ignore that last part. :p

He is also 38. Brady is starting to get up there in age and we'll see if he is the same QB since he has had to dedicate a lot of time in court and not nearly enough time focusing on football IMHO.

Goodell hasn't really done anything to further that. Replace Goodell with any other qualified person and the league still rakes in biillions.

Remember the ruling in the OJ case...... that made everyone believe he didn't kill anyone?

But it's like a political office, as long as times are good then we re-elect people.........because no one wants to rock the boat.

Sure another commissioner would probably do just as good, but if you're the owners why chance change disrupting the ridiculous money flow going into your pockets right now?

Comparing billionaires to average voters is silly. Most of the owners are shrewd businessmen and are highly interested in making sure that the money keeps flowing; they're not going to just sit back and assume everything will stay the same.

That isn't to say that he will be replaced for sure, but to suggest that there is no chance that he will get replaced due to how much money the league rakes in is incorrect.

So.

Is the official line now that the Patriots pay a $1M fine, fire two members of staff for something the team still denies is possible, but nothing actually happened?

Or is it that the Patriots pay a $1M fine, fire two members of staff for something the team denies is possible, but Brady never knew anything about something actually happening that never actually happened?

I'm confused.

I haven't given two sh*ts about deflategate since the news broke right after the AFC Championship game. And I can honestly care less that Brady got let off the hook.

Yes he is a bit of a slimeball, but when it is all said and done he will go down as one of the best, if not the best QB of all time. And for those who think this will tarnish his legacy, I'm not so sure about that. People quickly forget. Almost no one remember's Kobe Bryant's rape case. People will remember his great play and superbowl wins before they even think about deflategate.

Yes you are.

The league cannot have random penalties and must follow guidelines and procedures when administering punishment.

And you must have more than circumstantial evidence when imposing penalties.

Goodell has already announced his appeal. I get the feeling that this judge wanted to rule for Brady the whole time. Bad luck, but he probably won't have bad luck twice. It should also inform Goodell of how to select his arbitraters and independent investigators in the future. Just because Goodell can get away with having a buddy do the investigation and act as his own arbitrator by the cba doesn't mean it won't be vulnerable in court if the judge is sympathetic to the other party.

A better example than Kobe (off-field incident) would be Shoeless Joe Jackson, who has been talked about much this week. He is still denied the HOF just for maybe knowing about others' cheating. He was cleared in court, but remains ostracized by MLB.

That said, baseball is much more stringent on its history and HOF requirements, since much of the early early days were fraught with corruption. The NFL is more about continuing this lineage of a few Jedi Master QBs per era. Even though Tawmy "more then likely knew" about deflated footballs, not enough writers think it's a big enough deal to deny him the Gold Jacket.

Jackson was not acquitted of throwing games; there was no law against throwing games.

Also, Jackson admitted under oath that he took money to throw the games, and he signed a confession.

This just in: Cheating OK if you're a superstar.

Ridiculous.

This just in: Evidence matters when you accuse someone of cheating.

I think he absolutely did it.. but the NFL botched this from the get go.
