I friggin love this guy already.
This. This gives me good vibes. If Bobby said we should do it - then I'm 100% on board. Also, I can not imagine that Schneider would not have talked to Wagner about bringing Jones IV to the Seahawks.
Couldn't you say the same thing about Jones? Not so much what Mac wanted as it was what he could get at the time
NoCouldn't you say the same thing about Jones?
What?Couldn't you say the same thing about Jones?
The problem is that our media and fan base have been talking about the "Roquan Smith Trade" as some pivotal moment needed to shift our defense from the bottom five to the top five for months. So, when the comparison is made, that's the underlying connotation and expectation. The comparison is more about what they bring to the team, rather than how equal they are as players.
Ernest may not have the ceiling of Roquan, but what he does bring to the team is a true fit at MIKE.
Dodson wasn't that. Dodson is better as a weakside linebacker, and now he can play his preferred spot.
Ernest brings a high level of versatility, though. He isn't just a run stuffer. He can carry the deep hook in zone, he's quick to process what's happening in coverage, he's an adept blitzer, and he seems like a potential leader. He's a versatile linebacker and that along with moving Dodson to his better spot has the potential to raise the ceiling of this defense tremendously.
Quality stuff.
I agree that the situations are not a perfect parallel, and I don't think it moves the needle that severely. The problem is that our media and fan base have been talking about the "Roquan Smith Trade" as some pivotal moment needed to shift our defense from the bottom five to the top five for months. Now, it's pretty clear that people aren't actually reading my comments here. So I won't get into the run-stopper stuff, as any nuanced discussion is treated as hating and such (even though I said I liked the trade and the player).
Agreed. Jones fits in nicely with the Seahawks' defense. He doesn't need to be elite in coverage because we have the pass rush and secondary to hide him while he develops in that aspect of our scheme. He's also a good enough blitzer that hiding him becomes easier. So if he can marginally improve the run defense, that might be enough to shift them toward a top-ten defense, as you said.I agree that the situations are not a perfect parallel, and I don't think it moves the needle that severely.
I do think it raises the ceiling for this defense almost as much as Roquan did for the Ravens at the time. Roquan is better, but MIKE felt like more of an Achilles heel for our defense considering the fairly destructive talent on the DL and the mostly high level play in the secondary.
So much of the defensive pain could be placed squarely on the LBs, especially Baker. If this goes how I think it's going to go, it feels to me like we've fixed a fatal flaw that'll allow this defense to really make strides toward top-10 territory.
And believe me, man. I love nuance.
Fire John Schneider and replace him With Bill Belechik? This must be one of Mike's picks, so let's see how it turns out.
On the surface, it looks like a bad trade. He needs to be resigned next year, gave up a 4th, and a serviceable player for him. Baker was a 3rd round draft pick, and Jones was a 3rd round draft pick, so we are losing a 4th out of this deal.
I don't like it, but maybe coach sees Jones as a key player moving forward. I propose that the Seahawks hire Bill Belichick for General Manager (if he would go for it), that guy always seems to find trading partners, who are suckers.
Titans win trade, unless Jones turns out to be a leader on defense. That's my take.
Schneider probably had at least something to do with it.The other good thing about this trade is that it allows Dodson to move to weakside LB, where he is a better fit. He is top ten among LBs in coverage, but is literally the worst starting MLB in stopping the run. That was also his weakness in college, and it hasn't gotten better.
Kudos to whoever is doing the self-scouting and diagnosed the weakness and fixed it.
Sorry RedAlice.. but your annoyance makes me feel all tingly inside my friend. I dislike the Rams in a brotherly kind of way but hate and wish pestilences on Santa Clara.good trade for the Hawks.
I'm beyond annoyed.
