After 9 games: #10 in O, #8 in D, #1 in ST

Our defense is graded higher than our offense, and hey, our special team is #1 in the league! On defense, our run defense and tacking remain the weak spots, coverage keeps improving. On offense, our receiving and run blocking, yes run blocking are strength. Passing (hello Geno) and pass blocking remain the weaknesses.

Since week 2 Lions' game, our defense moved up from #30 to #8, our offense moved down from #3 to 10, how things changed. According to these PFF gradings, we are the borderline top 10 team that won't go far in playoffs. We are 6th ranked in NFC after 9ers #1, Cowboys #3, Lions #5, Eagles #7 and Vikings #8, there are 6 NFC teams in top 10, only 4 for AFC according to the opinions of PFF.

Something may not be right on these PFF gradings:

1. Our consistently #7 ranked run blocking vs #12 rank rushing, something wrong with our backs or plays? Holes were there but backs not using them?
2. Our consistently #20 or below ranked pass blocking vs #14 ranking passing and #5 ranked receiving. Our QB and WRs are overcoming poor blocking every week?
3. Our receiving may be #5 ranked, but out receivers are DK #27, Lockett #34, Bobo #43, Fant #87, Dissly #142, JSN #159. So we are a top receiving team without top receivers?
4. Our run defense suffered without Nowasu, can we move Jones to fill his role? Frank Clark isn't doing it, and Taylor can't do it.

PFF isn't the Holy Grail of data. They get a lot wrong and are best used for getting a rough idea of what's going on. I wouldn't draw too many conclusions from that data.

Whaaat? 6 NFC teams in the top 10 vs 4 AFC teams, not sure what kind algorithm PFF uses but the NFC is a hot mess this year compared to the AFC.

I mentioned this in another thread. Jones played about 50/50 interior vs edge against Washington and did pretty well. Even got a sack. More of Jones at edge means more Reed and Williams combo which is a very good thing.

Your only mistake is expecting PFF grades to make sense. Sometimes they do, but most times not.

I totally agree with ya, and we have Myles Adam and Cam Young to backup Williams and Reed.

PFF RBLK grades are only tangentially related to the effectiveness of the running game. They are basically asking whether the lineman met a specific criteria off the snap. That doesn't always translate to an effective running game.

Chad Morton has been involved in the running game for 7 years and has been helping coordinate some pretty successful years.

You want to understand what's wrong with our run game? We haven't committed enough to it. And when we run, it's telegraphed. The plays are not diverse. Not enough runs from under center. Not enough power. RPO doesn't work unless the qb occassionally runs. And we have a lead back that likes to bounce outside more than any other in the league. Stopping K9 for a defense isn't hard to do when you know that all you have to do is close down the middle enough to force him outside, where you stack the edge. It's why NOT using Charbs is borderline idiocy. It's shown that when he gets totes inside, he gets yards.

Waldron needs to grow as an OC.
