You sustain your pet's very life with food and shelter. It SHOULD love you without giving it a second thought. Respect for the food chain is not a negative trait in an animal.

(Not that I would treat a dog like garbage like the hypothetical posted, but their instinct for unconditional love for their master is a good thing.)
