A little salary cap math if you care (skip if you don't)

I projected final cuts and added all the remaining contracts to figure out where our cap space might pan out.

To do this, I made most of the cuts we expect. The two players who are higher salary I cut are McDonald and Farwell.

Remember, before final cuts on the top 51 contracts count towards the cap. After final cuts ALL contracts, including injured guys and practice squad (about $800,000) count, so even if you cut some higher salaries, the total available cap usually goes down after final cuts.

When it is all said and done, the team would have about $1.8M in available cap to start the season. That amount can disappear quickly taking into account injury replacements during the year, so really they could end the season with little or no money to carry into 2014.

These numbers can change dramatically. Last year they cut Winslow before the season started which we didn't expect.

Yeah we are all in this year. No doubt.

Next year though it gets interesting. Tate, Bennett, Giacomini, McQ, Robinson, WT3, and whats up with Browner? Is he restricted or not? Conflicting reports since he spent a year in Denver.

Add in extending guys like Sherman and Earl....

I think guys like Red, Rice, and Miller may be on the chopping block.

Thoughts?

I cannot see the team entering the season with that tight a squeeze on the cap. They must be trying to re-negotiate some contracts or have some painful cuts coming to veterans that will shock a few folks.

Miller and Rice are going to be restructured if anything.. they want to be part of this. I am a little hesitant with Miller only because of the R.R.R. - they were always jazzing him about his pay check and he always got all serious when prodded...

lets hope they want to restructure...

For me, I'd like to think we could keep Browner at a 4 year deal. Miller gets renegotiated for cheaper, same for Rice. McQ signs a cap friendly deal/smallish contract. Tate, Bennett, Robinson, WT3, and Red all move on. Giacomini is on a prove it year.

We need to keep Tate. He is our Hines Ward. The kind of player that beats you some way in almost every game. Keep him for the next 8 years if possible.

Yes. Tate all day. I admit I didn't think he would amount to much initially. I am less infatuated with Baldwin.

Miller, Rice, M-Rob....all are targets to renegotiate I would think.

PS - Thanks John.....kinda miss your regular salary cap updates from the old days.

I don't see what your concern is. Once the season starts, there probably won't be any additions other than emergency injury replacements, which tend to be rather cheap compared to front line players, most of whom have jobs if their any good. $1-2 mill after we set the 53 should be enough for that.

I read somewhere that GMs usually wanted ~3-5M in cap space minimum going into the season. Just parroting that concern.

Looking at the carnage following today's cut, I see the Seahawks going into the season with about $3.5M in available cap definitely more than I guessed earlier in the week but I didn't have Robinson leaving, although I did have Farwell going.

There are some IR guys who might get cut loose (Kenneth Boatright comes to mind) which would add some dollars back. Also, I'm not really sure what Therald Simon being on "NFI" means cap-wise.

Bottom line -- not a lot of dollars figure to roll into 2014. The good news is there are some big contracts that I don't think will remain in 2014 (well that's good news for extending Sherman/Thomas but bad news for Bryant/Rice/Clemons)

Remember -- salary cap projections are ALWAYS very very fluid. Anyone who tells you (ahem, Fieldgulls dude) they know how it all projects out is full of crap.

Go Hawks!

I've lived by a few simple rules. At the top is "if hawkstorian says it, I believe it!"

Drdaigs.... you might have our GM's wishes confirmed!

I hate this day. It is a necessary evil but at least the majority of the bleeding has stopped. Let's get this season started!

Brian McIntyre has us at $3.9M, so we're in the same ballpark.

If Hawkstorian says it, I believe it!

Well Brian Mac stayed around here long enough to learn from John before he and his buddy Doub Farrar faded into the Scout sunset.

It's almost a blast from the past to have our once eminent (prior to his long sabatical b) cap guru Hawkstorian reporting again on our team's cap position. We can only hope he continues?
