Incorrect we have sucked on 3rd down since 2010. Hmm that's when PC got here. Fyi PCs teams in the NFL with him as HC have always been bad on 3rd down. Why.. simple when you are run centric that's leads to a lot of 3rd and longs

Not true. They average 16.54th out of 32 teams since 2010. Almost dead average. They rank only slightly better on average since 2012, at 15.11th out of 32.

Last year was the year they passed the most, and they came in 27th.

Serviceable rushing attacks also keep the chains moving. In 2019, Baltimore was the best 3rd down team, and in 2020 they were second to Green Bay - both teams that run the ball significantly more frequently than the average team.

A different way to look at 3rd down conversion stats:

https://www.fieldgulls.com/seahawks...awks-broncos-final-stats-3rd-down-conversions

The problem with 3rd down conversion percentage is that it doesn't even measure what it's supposed to measure. Teams which turn the ball over on 2nd and long end out with better third down percentages. Teams that earn a first down on 1st or 2nd down end out with worse conversion rates.

...

Of course, if we were trying to use 3rd down conversion rates as an indicator of a team's ability to stay on the field, advance the ball, and score points, why didn't we just measure those things?

The stats an average fan wants to key on may not tell the whole story. “Suck” is a reach. I get it. I want them to score on every possession too, but that’s not realistic.

The Seahawks have always been average to bad on 3rd downs.

2012-2014 they were 40%,47%,43% on third downs.

2020 They were 27th in the NFL at 38%
2019 40% 13th
2018 37% 18th

The team is kind of all over the place and part of it is their inability to complete 5 to 9 yard passes.

Well since Wilson completes over 60% of his passes on third down with a 6.5 YPA I would ay it is not a passing issue. However, that said I do believe it is more a system issue we have a habit of calling plays that are either mostly all go routes or mostly all just short of the stick routes. Given this issue sis a PC NFL career as a HC issue this points to the system

My mentality if I were a coach is to focus on getting first downs on first and 2nd downs.
Too much reliance on big plays on 3rd downs IMHO.

We were top 5 in longest distance to get 1st down On 3rd down. So that might have something to do with it

Make that inability to make those 5-9 yards passes UNDER 3rd down situations. No doubt it was Pete calling the wrong plays under those situations, or he failed to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage, even if the calls and adjustments were correct, Pete often failed to execute. Tell ya, Pete is a must fire.

6.5 yards is not a first down when you routinely are going for 3rd and 10 or 15 and or 20.

Exactly so why are they always calling such short pass patterns? That's my point, we are top 5 in longest 3rd down requirement and yet call alot of to long and to short patterns. That is a system issue.

The patterns are long and incomplete, or short and to the sidelines no RAC, you need to use slants, seam, screens, RB late release into the flat. We use a lot of fade to the sidelines where Wilson throws the ball right to the out of bounds marker and either it's long or a contested ball where the receiver goes out of bounds also.

It all starts with the first 2 downs and what was called. Being 3rd and long consistently doesn't help the cause.
For first two downs, if one of them was a long ball, which has lower completion % and the other a rush which averaged less than 4 yards, you shall have lots of third and long.

It's Carroll, or it's Wilson...or it's Carroll...or it's Wilson...or it's Carroll...or it's Wilson...or it's Carroll...or it's Wilson...

...thank goodness you weren't Brett Hart or Shawn Michaels fans back in '97.

I would like to see a breakdown of our percentages based on down and distance too. Are we leaving a lot of easier conversions ie 3rd and 5 or less on the field? Is the team in way too many 3rd and longs were conversation is a lot harder? The weird thing was that third down issue was there even when the offence was flying high early in the year.

Our stars simply shifted into a different gear when it was 3rd down.

There could be something to this.

The number of drives stalled by a 3rd and long because of: 1) a sack, or 2) a penalty (holding, false start, especially), or 3) loss of yards on a run seems an all too frequent occurrence to me, but maybe that's just the frustration outweighing reality.
