I have a very rudimentary understanding of these positions on the d-line. A few years ago someone (Kearly?) posted an explanation of each position. Does anyone have an x and o's type of graphic organizer that would help to understand the positioning. From an old school point of view, a person can look at an x and o lineup and get a pretty good idea of positioning.

ie:

LDE DT DT RDE

Any help would be great. Thanks!

Using the above grid, the 1 tech lines up off the shoulder of the center and is usually the recipient of the double team between the center and the guard. Mebane is our one tech. Needs to be quick off the snap, but mostly strong enough to threaten both players.

3 tech is a one gap shooter wh usually faces single blocking from a guard. Quickness, agility and hand work are the key here. branch manned this spot last year, with McDainel and Hill battling for it this year. It's also whe Bennett plays on passing downs.

5 tech plays like a tradition 3-4 end, head up on the tackle, controlling two gaps to each side. Power is key to hold position and to she'd the block either direction to play the ball carrier. Red is our guy and probably the prototype at this position in the NFL today.

LEO really plays more like a wide 9 . . . Although on running downs they may play more like a 6 or 7. Speed, agility, burst and the ability to play in space are key. Clemons plays this role for us.

5 tech is going to be lining up shaded just outside the OT's outside shoulder on the strong side. 1 tech will often shade strong over center, but sometimes weak. 3 tech will be weakside outside shade of the gaurd and Leo can be between 7 and 9.

Red did say that he'd be playing a lot of 4 though and that means he'll be two gapping directly over the OT. This may or may not have an effect on the nose, but could make him a traditional NT two gapper a la 3-4 as well.

Generally speaking the alignment does show the intent so odds and evens are significant. 1 gap vs 2 gap. I haven't really watched enough to go over what mixture there will be this year. We've only seen base anyway.
