I don't blame them. It's a huge number, but it's only for one year, and gives them a chance to either sign him long-term or try to get something for him. Hard to let a player like that walk away.

It's the Lions. Gotta take advantage of any chances you get. I don't think they can afford to let him go.

Wow,
There isn't a player on my team I would be willing to have that much money go to....
Other than Fitzgerald who is set to make 23.6 million next season

Fitzgerald won't be getting that. He either restructures which it sounds like they are getting closer to doing, or he walks....

I think the only reason they tag him would be to buy time to work out a long term deal without other teams interfering. It's definitely a gamble, because failing to agree to a deal would stick them with that ridiculous cap hit.

Exactly.

Hawks did the same with Leroy Hill. Tagged him, drafted Curry, removed the tag from Hill and then signed him long term a bit later.

Just because a team FTs a player doesn't mean they are on the hook for the FT price tag.

I believe if they tag him and he signs before taking it off they are on the hook. Hill didn't sign which allowed the Hawks to remove it and then negotiate after drafting Curry.

I wouldn't pay it, but that is just me.

This only works when the tag amount is not advantageous to the player. That was the case with Hill, who sought guaranteed money beyond one season. Making $26 million in one season would almost certainly be worth the risk to Suh. That is $10 million more than J.J. Watt's per-year average.
