I'm in the camp that thinks Howell has been judged too harshly & see SH and SD as much closer talent- wise vs far apart. What Howell did in his 2nd season in Washington, with horrible play calling & OLine, completely under duress was better than anything Darnold showed in his first 4 seasons of starting. IMHO.
It's almost a certainty that Darnold will start, but I'm betting this will be more of a horse race behind the scenes as we move towards the season.
We'll see who seizes the reins and develops chemistry with JSN, Barner, ect and yes Bobo.
They need to select their favorite QB in the draft and carry 3 on the roster.

Sam Howell will outcompete Sam Darnold in camp, no doubt about it, but who will start after all that?

.NET to Sam Howell, we have your back; we are your voice.
Sounds like a Matt Flynn /Russell Wilson scenario.

I don't care what anyone says, I like Howell. They should have ran with Howell this year and throw money at the fricking O-line. Darnold, whatever. They COMPLETELY overpaid for dude.. No way in hell I give that QB that kind of money after ONE descent year.
No less than 8 quarterbacks make more than 50 million a season now. Darnold is a bargain. Did Darnold get 100 million or 110 million? Conflicting stories....

OK, let's say we are headed for a QB competition/controversy.
We know it's not Steve Young vs Joe Montana, but what will it resemble?

Jeff Hostetler vs Phil Simms
Vinny Testaverde vs Bernie Kosar
Philip Rivers vs Drew Brees
Russell Wilson vs Justin Fields
Daniel Jones vs Drew Lock
Matt Flynn vs Russell Wilson
Jim Zorn vs Dave Krieg

Or is is this a battle of attrition already won by Darnold because of the hype & investment? I hope they draft a guy like Dart that surprises everyone and pushes both Sam's to the brink.

Now that Lock is back it seems we might look to flip Howell for a pick. Stocking up for the draft. Maybe to have ammo to trade up? 🤔

Can't you carry a QB now without it affecting your starting 53? I thought that changed last year or something. Makes it more likely we'd carry 3 vs. the earlier years of 2.

I think Howell is a perfectly servicable back-up that is cheap as chips so we should be able to get a 6th or at worst 7th for him. Other teams might want to see if a QB falls to them in the draft so he could be traded after the draft for a 2026 pick. Could even happen during pre season if someone gets injured.

If Lock was any good he would have gotten a 1-year prove-it deal rather than sign for a 2nd year at what is effectively QB minimum wage. It suggests Lock will struggle to make a Week 1 roster in the NFL. Lock is a low cost competitor/camp-arm. Why pre-empt a camp battle by trading away an experienced rookie-contract QB for a low pick that probably won't make the roster?

I think if a team really needing a QB doesn’t come away with one we will trade him for a 6th
