Cutting him doesn't help them. They just want to bring his cap number down but the savings if they cut him is minimal.

Either they work something out or they pay him the bonus and leave his contract as is.
Again, all of the dead cap is going to be accounted for over the next 2 seasons regardless of what happens today. This is purely about whether the 49ers are willing to pay Williams $33.06M this season. If the 49ers pay the $10M roster bonus they won't have much leverage over the remaining $23.06M, or how this year's money is accounted for.

So you’re cool with paying a 38 year old tackle a base salary in 26’-27’ of $48 million dollars? That $38 mil plus the $10 million dollar roster bonus he was due yesterday. Sure you can back load the books but you’re already top 5 in dead money in real time. Seattle leads the league in lowest dead money cap hit. These teams are just managed differently. Glad we got JS

Is it that they are managed all that differently, or that they are just in different parts of the lifecycle that successful teams go through?

Its not as much about cash as Cap...and Cap going forward.

49ers are top 5 in spending cash over last several years. Its not a cash issue.

Probably a bit of both.

Niners look at cap in 3 year increments. They don't mind pushing money and dead cap into future years and those dollars are actually less valuable...IE when the cap goes up.

Example....1 mill on 180 mil cap is more than 1 mil on 260 mil cap. Every once in awhile they need to bite the bullet and reset to kill a bunch of the dead cap, and thats what last year was with over 90 mil in dead cap. Notice how different they've handled this FA period compared to last year.

You are also correct that they are in a different spot in the cycle as they have several vets with very large contracts. You don't have that yet because you have a number of contributors still on their rookie deals.

He won't count 48 mil. That's what they are negotiating down.

Niners are high in dead cap because of the way they structure deals...which is pushing back that money into years when the cap is higher.

Seattle will run into this as well at some point....they are just young and have alot of players still on rookie contracts.

49ers hit reset last year which is why they had 90 mil in dead cap and they played so many rookies. If you recall when we were talking about the games I kept saying the 49ers shouldn't even be here. Yes...injuries were part of that, but so was the fact that last year was a cap reset year.

Note they've signed a number of guys, but NONE of them have broken the bank. ALL of them combined are less than 34 mil on this years cap.

BTW...its really easy to lead the league in dead cap when you are one of the youngest teams in the league. Seahawks have done a great job drafting and develpomg, but at some point, the $$$ come due. Then they'll have to make tough choices RE who they do or do not pay. It started already with Walker.

Yep... the Seahawks made hay while the sun was shining... meaning, John chose well in drafting players using the Me3 picks from Denver and then the picks from the Geno and DK trades... all while the Rams and Niners traded away several of their high draft picks for CMC and Stafford.

The young talent on this team has never been better!!

I think you mean CMC, but that trade isn't really the one that hurt. It was Trey Lance.

John is a great GM. No arguing that. The teams are just in different spots in the cycle right now.

Sounds like the 9ers lost both starting & back up LG's to free agency while having 37 year old LT Trent Williams in a contract dispute. Also lost their back up RB Robinson while CMC isn't getting any younger.
And people are worried about our running game?

True we are worried, S.F does not have a Cap like the Rams, they will probably sign a whole front 5 after June 1st.

Correction:

They let both the "starting" and backup LGs go because it was the weakest part of their O-Line and have signed three guys there. Will likely draft someone as well.

They also weren't going to pay Robinson as they like Jordan James (2024 Draft Pick).

Hey Marvin, thanks for all the 9er information and corrections but the 12's aren't too worried about the 49ers standing in the division at this point. I will say you guys hosted a fine Super Bowl and hope you get that debilitating electromagnetic practice field all figured out

Cool story. I'll post how I like and respond to other posters how I like.

Don't really care what you are or are not worried about. In the meantime, when you post something factually incorrect, I'll say so.

The saltiness level of Santa Clara fans in general seems to be elevated across the fan base.

It is almost like they know the end is nigh.

I have been given a heads up by the powers that be at .net that you are one of the few longtime rival posters that is courteous and respectful in their discourse.
So let's not mess that up Marvin.
I thought you were a stray dog that rolled in crap and got tied up on the far corner of the property while we waited for the owner to claim you.
I stand corrected, apparently you have achieved some level of standing and 'somone' in here is worried that if sent to the shelter, you'll be put down.
Tread lightly my friend.

No danger in messing anything up. I speak what I think and that isn't always pro Niners. If that has brought me some measure of respect here, cool beans.

I'll tread how I like.

Sorry, not sorry but was informed the rival .net poster in good standing was not you but 94Smith so we'll have to take back that little badge of honor... Thank-you.
Regardless of all that you both are apparently on the double secret probation watch list.

I'm going to have to turn my back and look the other way now.

Having other teams fans here keeps us a bit grounded in some aspects, hell we embraced them and I was all about making this place a second home in the NFL forum for them as a Mod because I thought there was a healthy bit of information to be exchanged.

Some members thought we should have an exclusivity as Seahawks fans here, I argued we have the main forum for in depth Seahawks discussion, the Smack Shack for talking shit, The NFL forum for all fans to mingle. It worked out so far as we have some really cool people that drop in from other teams. Yes smack talkers also but we can redirect them or simply swat them like a fly if necessary.

Now we have a Marriage due to this between a Ram and a Seahawk to add to the sites achievements due to its atmosphere.
