Tomlin stepping Down

I always liked Tomilin, while hating the Steelers.

I find it mind boggling that this is only the 4th coach for the Steelers in my lifetime.

If I was Tomlin, I wouldn't take a job with a team that didn't have something resembling a franchise QB in place, or at least a team that had a young QB with the potential to be one.

Or a complete rebuild team like the Raiders

I think Seattle has had 8?

If you count interim then I believe it is 8. I really think that’s not horrible for a 50 year period the you hear about the Steelers and their success with so few coaches and it’s kind of flabbergasting.

We haven't done too bad here. Holmie went 10. Pete went 13 (?). I'm hoping Mike hangs around a while with success.

Yeah, pretty wild. I'm 58 and between Tomlin, Cowher and Chuck Noll it's been 57 years between them.

It had gotten very stale there (sort of like the last few years of Pete in Seattle). Still, I'm surprised. Maybe Tomlin to BAL and Harbaugh to PIT? That would be some pro wrestling storyline type stuff.

Like Pastorini for Stabler.

I'm not surprised he stepped down. Nothing has changed there in years, and there's no sign that it will in the near future. Just no incentive for him to stay there.

I agree. In comparison, Tampa Bay has had 13 coaches in the same time .

As is being speculated elsewhere, I think there's a good chance that what's happening here is an amicable split between Tomlin and the Steelers. It's been pointed out that Art Rooney did not try to talk him out of leaving, and he's probably happy with the outcome.

I think Tomlin is a damn good coach. I'm not sure he's as good at talent evaluation. If it was his decision to go with DK Metcalf over George Pickens, then that is the sort of decision that will sink your ship. If it was GM Omar Khan's decision, then the front office isn't helping him build a decent roster.

Doesn't surprise me, actually. What *does* surprise me is 19 seasons without a single losing season. That is incredible.

At this point, he has made so much money as a coach that another year's salary does nothing for him. Nothing. You know how most people increase their lifestyle whenever they get a raise/promotion? There isn't really anything that another year buys him. He may have even stepped down 5 years ago if he had been able to deliver a 2nd championship. It makes sense that he would take time off to actually enjoy life.
As an aside, I think almost none of the coaches who started young will be coaching in their 60s. I think the newer generation of coaches are paid enough early enough that they don't want to be an obese slob in his 60s spitting barbecue sauce into the mic like previous generations of coaches. They'll stop coaching and convert to TV work where they can feel comfortable spending all the money they make.

I wouldn’t expect any owner to push a coach to stay who wants to go. That’s just not going to create a competitive team atmosphere.
