I think it would be a huge stretch for the fan to sue for libel. But if you can collect millions for spilling coffee on your lap, I suppose that anything is possible.

And I do think it likely that the league determined that Metcalf had lied to them about what the fan said. At my former place of employment, we fired multiple employees for lying in a company investigation. It was an unforgivable sin and made very clear to everyone who worked for us. That Metcalf lied to them may have entered into the league and the arbitrator's deliberations and might explain what the punishment was so over the top.

The Steelers don't have to rush into a decision. I'll say this because no-one else has - Metcalf played really well in the game after the incident. His down field blocking was a difference-maker on 2 big pays. Then again the Lions defense was in full-give-up mode.

It doesn't automatically void his guaranteed money. It gives the Steelers an out if they so choose, and so far, they have given no indication that they plan to cut ties with Metcalf, to the contrary, they've made public statements that he's still in their plans for their future.

There is a story out there that Metcalf supposedly reported the same fan to the team's security officer last year, but as far as I know, that story hasn't been confirmed.

Absolutely true. As was mentioned earlier, the Steelers don't have to make a decision for several months. They're still very much in the playoff hunt, and they don't want to say or do anything that might cause even more of a distraction than what's already occurred. The contract stuff can wait until the offseason.

Count me amongst the unsurprised by how this trade has so far panned out for the Steelers. I get why they moved on from Pickens (by all accounts he well wore out his welcome there), even though it was pretty clear to me from what I saw from Pickens that he had a noticeably higher skillset as a WR than DK.

Even with an albeit aging Rodgers as their QB, absent a decent number two receiver and a questionable rushing attack heading into the season, I just didn't see how DK's somewhat limited skillset as a number one receiver could overcome these things. It wasn't at all difficult for me to imagine a scenario of disappointment surrounding the trade and the contract he was offered by the franchise.

I always viewed DK in kind of the bottom third tier of number one receivers, yet he was traded for and offered a contract by the Steelers that paid him like he was one of the elite WR's in the league. In spite of what the franchise is currently saying, I can't help but think that they're at least *toying* with different scenarios involving DK and this latest development.

"Ryan Kennedy categorically denies using the 'N-word,' the 'C-word,' or any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based slur during the incident," the lawyers said. (Emphasis in the original.)

"The claims suggesting otherwise are untrue and are not supported by video evidence, eyewitness accounts, or any contemporaneous reporting," the lawyers said. "Despite reports in the media last night and today, Mr. Kennedy has not used such language during any interaction with Mr. Metcalf or any other players in the past."

I have mixed feelings. I don't want to see this fan get rich quick because I firmly believe that he baited Metcalf and that things happened so quickly, from the incident Sunday to filing a lawsuit less than a week later, that he had this planned in advance.

But on the other hand, it's becoming clear that Metcalf lied about the fan calling him and his mother those names, and you just can't make up stuff about specific individuals, especially words as inflammatory as 'n' and 'c', then post it on social media for the whole world to see. IMO Metcalf needs to suffer some sort of consequences for his actions.

I couldn't agree more. My only difference with what you said is that I don't want to see that fan get a penny of it. I'd love to see the judge award a multi-million-dollar settlement then insist as a condition that it all go to charity. I know it doesn't work that way, but that's my Christmas wish.

Yeah, the fact that those guys no longer play for us doesn't take away from the fact that it's an interesting drama.

I was surprised that neither the team nor the league are taking any action against the fan as it looked to me like he was clearly baiting Metcalf. They must have determined that he didn't hurl any racial insults and since he never left his seat, that he was within his rights, that it was Metcalf that invaded his space.

I read that both the Lions and NFL will not take any action against the fan because there is no proof that the fan violated the fan conduct policy

Yeah, that's the thing. Everyone on the planet knows that Metcalf is easily baited. Boy, Richard Sherman would take up residence inside Metcalf's head, wouldn't he?

That reminds me of when I saw Lester Hayes, an All-Pro defensive back for the Raiders known for his trash talking, being interviewed on a program. Hayes said that he tried his best to get into Steve Largent's head, calling him every name he could think of, to the point where Hayes honestly thought that Largent was deaf. That was until he tackled Largent after he had burned him for a 50+ yard pass reception, and Hayes said Largent got up and looked at Hayes, laughing at him.

I also think about reading and watching documentaries about Jackie Robinson, how he had to put up with so much verbal as well as physical abuse, especially in the first couple of years in the majors when he promised owner Branch Rickey that he would not answer or retaliate.

The funny thing about Robinson was that the abuse was so bad that it was actually beneficial for him as it infuriated Robinson's white teammates who sympathized with him and came to his defense.

Anyhow, sorry for going off on such a tangent.
