With the increase in AI/ fake news, do you think we would be a better community and source for all things SEAHAWKS if we cracked down on the posting of unverified speculation?

Maybe you enjoy the back n forth and tit for tat?

There is no right answer.

This is your house, you have a voice/ say.

Let’s hear your opinion on this.

I have three opinions on this:
  1. Posts featuring blatantly fake information without a clear disclaimer are annoying, potentially confusing/misleading, and a waste of my time. If someone posted something unaware or careless as to its bogus nature, in the very least, a moderator or the OP should update the Subject so that it is prefaced with something like "UNVERIFIED:" or "FAKE:" or the post should be removed. That said, we'll all need to be patient with each other on this since practically anyone can be fooled when the intention was to pass along interesting info that initially sounded potentially legit.
  2. Posts, especially the subject, need to be careful with wording, e.g., "RUMOR: Seahawks attempt to get Crosby" sounds like something happening right now, and should have been worded with "attempted" in the past tense.
  3. Everyone should be reminded to make it a habit of taking most linked info (to a write-up on another site, or social media, or whatever) with a grain of salt except for those that come from an established and reputable source.
Again, these are just my opinions.

It's hard to say what's right and not right these days. I voted yes but should be more under depends. Obvious Click Bait such as Chat Sports or some random person no one has ever heard of on X should not be allowed. But podcasters (Not the click bait ones and they are easy to spot both ways) and people on X like Brady Henderson, Greg Bell, etc should be allowed.

It doesn't help that many on social media intentionally post BS crafted to sound intriguing but with the sole intention of trying to get a boat load of clicks.

I agree as well.

@AROS

You know very well that there was a time that we DID NOT ALLOW anything to be posted without a link/verification of source etc.

I’m not necessarily saying anything one way or another but….

We have drifted afar from that particular aspect.

Personally I’ll support whatever the members actually want as a majority but I do believe we are allowing too much rumor, speculation and outright Fake information.

Hopefully we get enough responses here to make a decision and get back to a reasonable standard. (Whatever that is)

Agree. I'm OK with rumor/speculation posts from reputable sources. Sometimes they're actually privy, in one way or another, to not-yet-publicized info.

To be clear, I do NOT want any click bait, unverifiable speculative posts on the main forum, ever.

Verifiable, known sources are fine if they are speculating but the thread title MUST be clearly stated. Anything falling short of that paradigm should be removed from the forum.

That's my take.

I tend to come at these questions from an angle of, "What impression would a newcomer get?"

That's an important consideration. We want the board to grow. We want newcomers to be gratified and intrigued by the quality of the first things that cross their eyes, so they're tempted to stick around.

A second consideration is, can people be heard? If someone gets an essay in their head and wants to post it, this is good. It's content creation. But if fake news/AI bulletins are pushing that stuff down, I fear people will be discouraged from posting it.

So not an answer so much as an opinion of what we should be prioritizing as a community.

I voted “yes.” I’d rather come to my own conclusions about the relevancy of shared material. I don’t feel I need mods sanitizing content.

Being said, I do think community standards are worthwhile. Share a link or source, or clearly articulate its speculation.

Man, we would have to eliminate most sports news sites which I find are mostly pathetic with now a days reporting It's like anyone now a days can report from a laptop and say anything they want to regardless if it's factual are not...just my 2 cents..carry on....oh, we should also include even if someone posts something not true out just to be humorous....I've been guilty of that a time or two over the years...now...really...carry on.

I think as long as members note that the post is a rumor upfront it could be ok. A lot of what we discuss are things that might happen .

I’d vote for an ‘UNVERIFIED’ title label/tag for any rumor stuff. Straight away, any reader knows what they’re dealing with.

Then, if that rumor turns out to be unfounded, or a trade didn’t happen etc., then that thread could get labelled, after the event, appropriately.

Personally I could do without the AI slop, (that every other site is seemingly keen to incorporate), creeping in around here. If those websites are too lazy to write a clickbait article themselves, why should we bother re-posting it here?

AI clickbait is easy to spot (really bad graphics, *really* badly written articles) so it’s easy to steer clear of it.

Anyone can start rumors and speculate on things they have no clue about, keep that crap on reddit and X where it belongs. Verified sources should be required, I don't give a damn about some random scrub with "the scoop", lol. They can join dotNet and add join a legit convo if they want.

Agreed with a lot of what's already been said. I think posters on this site do a pretty good job of catching the real crap when it hasn't yet caught a mod's eye. For me it's just a question of locking/disappearing such posts if/when they arrive.

It MUST include at the BEGINNING of the title "RUMOR" or "SPECULATION" to give the viewer an immediate indication of the type of post so they can make an immediate decision as to whether they want to spend precious minutes they have reading it.

Sometimes I only have time to read one post, and the last thing I'm interested in is unfounded rumors or speculation.

Now if I have lots of time to read and participate, there have been some really good "what if" posts to be involved in. Sometimes these speculations come true, and we look like geniuses!

So yes, allow rumor and speculation, but the 1st word MUST describe the post.
