Defense was on point yesterday. It shouldn't matter WHO plays well, just as long as they get a W. I'll bow out of this Murphy talk. Had my fun, his play speaks for itself. Go Hawks. Go Murphy!

Two things can be true at the same time

He was mediocre and overrated last year

He is great now
That's 3 things, but I have issues with the 2nd.

He may have been overrated by some...not sure.

He was not mediocre last year! He didn't show in the sexy stats (sacks, TFL) extensively, but was excellent for pressures from predominantly the NT position, and yes fighting double-teams should be factored as it opens others to feed.

No doubt he is showing up stronger in the stat lines this year. Is that b/c he's better? Yup. And b/c the team leverages his strengths having Pili and others getting into the mix.

Were several on the forum saying he was a wasted 1st rd pick. Yep

I'm fine with criticism of players if they warrant it. Uninformed opinions with dumb/emotional takes are a waste of time to read. I get it, they will never stop...but still a waste of time. Fortunately, the board has many contributors with valid points and depth to move on.

Byron Murphy Rookie Season Overview
In his rookie season, Byron Murphy II recorded a 9.1% pressure rate, applying pressure on 9.1% of his pass-rushing snaps, which was comparable to other rookies despite a low sack total. He finished with 21 total pressures, the third-most among rookie defensive tackles, and had a 10% pass rush win rate, indicating he was more disruptive than his raw sack numbers suggested.
  • Pressure Rate: 9.1%
  • Total Pressures: 21, third-most among rookie defensive tackles
  • Pass Rush Win Rate: 10%
  • Other Notable Stats: Half a sack, two tackles for loss, and 36 total tackles
  • Context: His overall performance was impacted by injuries and a lack of opportunities compared to other first-round picks. Despite a low sack total, his advanced pressure metrics showed he was effective at disrupting the quarterback.

No , I am debating he had a great season like some of you claimed. He didn’t. He was OK not great. You have nothing to show except he was double team and his position doesn’t show up in stats

Now he is playing great and his stats show
For clarity, you called him mediocre last year, which many are taking issue with (correctly IMO).

Those saying he had a better season than he was getting credit for, supported their opinions with data and not just an excuse of being double-teamed. However, I will argue that a double-team rate is a factor to look at due to it's several implications.

1. Most agree that his play has improved from his rookie year (I argue it's for more reasons than just personal growth).
2. And he had a great rookie season last year.

Those two things are true at the same time.
