Yeah it seems that Geno Smith sorta reverted back to his late Jets' days (attitude wise) - it's insane to think he got punched in the face by a teammate for owing him money.

Carroll did well to use Geno in his Seattle days, and likely will as well in Vegas....until someone else comes along.

Seattle fans are interesting when our sports heroes leave. I think the best example of this is the Mariners.

Alex Rodriguez claimed he wanted to stay in Seattle, meanwhile he was negotiating the (then) largest contract in MLB history.
Ken Griffey Jr. flat out said he wanted to play for his Dad's old team, the one he grew up hanging out in the clubhouse. No animosity, just a childhood dream he wanted to fulfill, and he was honest about it.
Randy Johnson wasn't offered a contract by the Mariners because they were concerned about his health, and he was traded. As I remember, he wasn't happy with the organization but never took it out publicly on the team.

When those three players came back to Seattle with their new teams, Griffey and Johnson both got standing ovations. When Alex came back, people booed and threw fake money onto the field.

I see Wagner as equivalent to Johnson - didn't leave by his own decision but kept it classy. I bet if he ever comes back to Lumen Field with the redsk....I mean Commanders he gets a standing ovation too.

Russ is like Alex - say all the right things in public while doing his best to sign a record breaking contract. I don't even think it's the contract that is the issue with fans, it's the speaking out of both sides of his mouth.

I don't think Alex gave a crap about what fans thought of him. Russ seems to want everyone to like him. So I guess there is that difference between them. And, the Seahawks did get good value in exchange.

There has been only 1 time in Seattle sports when I have been bitter when a player left, and that was A--Ho....er... A-Rod back in 2001. Geno isn't good enough or important enough to act like a pissy ex who just got jilted. He wanted out, and to paraphrase Aladdin, "He got it... and everything that goes with it!"

Personally, I think it started when some thought Geno was a QB to build around and move forward with, and others thought he was a placeholder QB till we found a better QB for the future. And then it went on from there. Just MO.

Keasly Geno was loved off the bat here with his first year. Geno eventually wears thin everywhere he has gone.
He has the mentality of a 3 year old. He has no one to blame but himself for this.
Has nothing to do with circumstances or other players and everything to do with him.

In comparison, Sam Darnold is beloved in every NFL locker room he's been a part of from the Jets all the way to here.

And he seems a ton more mature.

It's funny to compare the narratives around Darnold and Geno being they ended up here under similar circumstances, though Sam put a solid year on tape to get him the job here. Geno had to put good tape up with far less than Sam had in Minny and does now. But where Sam gets a glass half full B- for a lack luster game in which he fumbled the ball away in scoring position, Geno was crucified over and over again and labeled 'unaable to close' under similar circumstances his first full year as a starter here.
One guy followed the 'Hero' and so every error was magnified. The other guy followed the guy many never wanted and when the glass could be half empty, it looks refreshing, chilled and half full.
I personally root for Geno and Sam and am entertained by the slow collapse of Me3. Geno could have been a lot better here had he not been strapped with OCs who were never qualified to be such. Sam has the benefit of playing on probably the most well coached and well balanced team we have had around here in a dozen years. I hope he takes full advantage of it and throws the doors off the place.

I mostly agree, but I would point out that Geno failed multiple times, while Darnold, so far, has really only had the one, bad game costing type of mistake. I think fans are savvy enough to know that one mistake doesn't define a guy, and until Darnold throws away multiple games, he will get a fair amount of slack.

Geno in relief duty when Russ went down in '21 puts on a passing clinic against the Jags (one of the worst team in the League) completing his first 15 passes and running a broken offense coordinated by a bust of an OC and it's passed off as a nothing burger because of the competition ( the Jags I think best the Bills or came close to it a few weeks later if I remember correctly).

Sam beats the worst team in the league in the Saints, plays a solid game, and is hailed for how high he ranks in several categories going into week 4.

Just saying, that's the reality of the temperature that was around Geno and his time as a Hawk. The double standard / half full / half empty thing isn't a fabrication. Some players pay more attention to fan opinion than others. Geno is the type to pay attention to it, to his detriment. It fuels him, and it holds him back. He no doubt felt it in Seattle.

One of the best things about him not being here is that for better or worse, this fanbase can now hopefully collectively turn the page on the Pete/Russ/ Geno era and just enjoy football without rooting interests in individual players dominating the discourse .

Oh I'm sorry...He's not your boy Geno, @keasley45 . I forgot.

Because Sam is 7 years younger and was just coming off a near-MVP season. He still has some upside whereas Geno at his age in this point of his career is what he is. That's just the reality of things.

BTW, the jury is still out on Darnold despite the encouraging signs but even if he doesn't work out, the deal to acquire him still was the right one because Geno wanted OUT so he can go play for Daddy Carroll. And we got a draft pick out of it.

I should clarify. When I talk about Geno’s failures, I’m specifically talking about his games as a Seahawk.

If Sam goes on to perform like Geno, his fumble will be re-evaluated as a recurrent problem, rather than an aberration.

I understand this sentiment...though I think this has more to do with the national offseason narrative than it does with the player himself. The Seahawks were ridiculed all offseason for letting him go and adding Darnold.

Geno sucks on the fueld and off and I’m so glad that we have Sam. You don’t even notice Sam, like an offensive lineman just putting in work, Sam just does his job and he is humble, you have to like a man like Sam. This team is playing like a well oiled machine and each unit is lifting up the next. We can win any game any way and that’s my kinda football. Let’s go!!!
