I will say that while I'm not dwelling on the issue at all, that in my opinion - there are ways to leave any arrangement. Whether that's a relationship, a sports team, a job, or any other attachment/commitment.

Russ, Geno, ET, Deion Branch, DK - in my mind are all examples of players leaving with varying degrees of 'scorched earth' policy. Russ trying to get management fired, Geno just being a ******* douche, ET courting the Cowboys in the open and the finger, Branch "You know where to find me", DK "**** them" (and that was last week!) - are all examples of ways NOT to do things - ways to NOT leave a relationship. I dislike all of them for it, and I'm pretty happy that none of them are here. They can all pretty much **** themselves as far as I'm concerned - without affecting my daily life or obsessing about them on a daily basis.


That's my .02.

And compare that to Wagner, one of the true, all-time greats, who at least has a reason to beef with Seattle, but didn’t make an ass of himself.

He will always be welcomed with open arms, and never booed.

What did Geno Smith do that made him hated so much now? Contract issue?

He did make the post Wilson era look acceptable at the very least and beat him head to head in the revenge game.

Personally, I think it started when some thought Geno was a QB to build around and move forward with, and others thought he was a placeholder QB till we found a better QB for the future. And then it went on from there. Just MO.

Constantly pouted whined and threw int's. Thought he was elite when he is mid.
Demanded top tier money while being very mid. Wanted out of the place that gave him his last opportunity to start. Then said he was disrespected with a very large contract offer.
Constantly holding onto the ball and getting sacked rather than throwing it away.
I am so glad he is gone.

Yeah it seems that Geno Smith sorta reverted back to his late Jets' days (attitude wise) - it's insane to think he got punched in the face by a teammate for owing him money.

Carroll did well to use Geno in his Seattle days, and likely will as well in Vegas....until someone else comes along.

I still would've rather gone with Jones this offseason but am super happy with Sam ATM. All the best to Geno, but glad he's in the desert now with Pete.

I understand this sentiment...though I think this has more to do with the national offseason narrative than it does with the player himself. The Seahawks were ridiculed all offseason for letting him go and adding Darnold.

That, and for trading DK Metcalf. The Seahawks were supposed to have no offense this year.

The thing to me is that Kubiak (and MM, of course) have built a team that is not dependent on a superstar QB to win a lot of games. A "game manager" type works pretty good as long as the other parts of the team stay strong.

I try to not let the business bother me.

Geno spent most of his career trying to get you a starter position and produce - he strung together a couple good years here and was a nice post- Russ bridge.

Seattle had him for another year and was in no hurry to extend him to larger dollars - he didn't want to risk another year without security behind it

LV was willing and the move was made

Darnold had sent similar pathing, but younger. His last team went in a different direction, but he used that year to get him an opportunity.

Both contacts are roughly similar - pathway for 3 seasons with he team, total money in the $105-$106M range. Geno rougher on the cap this year, Darnold in the next 2.

I think Sam is mostly lateral, but with age and system has more of a chance to take a step than Geno did.

I think Geno has shown his high water mark.

I think Sam provides that at a younger age for similar cash and more upside potential

Basically a better bridge for the money

I don't dislike Geno did seeking to maximize when he can. I can also forgive some emotions when a player is told they aren't valued to the level they think they should be.

Honestly DK is similar.

We've seen this in free agency as well - guys you like, but not that much. The Ken Lucas of the world - Carolina paid a lot for what they designated as a second corner and then ended up cutting him for cap reasons the deal was done

RW was a little different as it wasn't just a money thing - he was going in on legacy and coaching and throwing teammates under the bus. Going from a loved and protected position to getting everything he wanted and then failing miserably without any love or protection. From all the good will to none. He didn't get that bit.

Hutch was similar. His ego got to him

I do feel like Sam is a notch above "game manager" status. By no means a superstar, but he has tools that are above many QBs' arsenals. Certainly above Geno's and RW3 today.

I do not disagree. After all, that last drive in SF was a bit more than game-manager-ish until the fumble.

Geno followed Russ and did well where a ton of folks thought he would completely flop and were embarrassed to have him as our starter. The disdain started before he even became our potential starter long term, the year before Russ left. When Russ went down with his finger injury Geno didn't do badly, but you would have thought he was the worst player in the league reading some of the reactions.
It was part the fact he followed Me3 and part his own doing, honestly. If you were on the fence with Geno it was easy to turn away from him because he didn't always make the best choices - talking emotional outbursts, getting pulled over for a dui and not keeping his mouth shut, getting into spats with fans over silly insults. All of it may have been overlooked were it not for the baggage that came with him after getting clocked in the jaw by a teammate and having to have his mouth wired shut afterwards. Roomer was he was got in a seat with the player and took the 'i'm the franchise QB ... Who are you...' immature, thin skinned attitude and paid with his face. And that's not hard to believe given how he seems to be unable to ignore insults and HAS to push back and have the last word. Thing is, that way of behaving isn't uncommon among competitive athletes. It's part of what drives them. And I think Geno built his entire career off of being told what he couldn't do and then having to prove himself.

It's funny to compare the narratives around Darnold and Geno being they ended up here under similar circumstances, though Sam put a solid year on tape to get him the job here. Geno had to put good tape up with far less than Sam had in Minny and does now. But where Sam gets a glass half full B- for a lack luster game in which he fumbled the ball away in scoring position, Geno was crucified over and over again and labeled 'unaable to close' under similar circumstances his first full year as a starter here.
One guy followed the 'Hero' and so every error was magnified. The other guy followed the guy many never wanted and when the glass could be half empty, it looks refreshing, chilled and half full.
I personally root for Geno and Sam and am entertained by the slow collapse of Me3. Geno could have been a lot better here had he not been strapped with OCs who were never qualified to be such. Sam has the benefit of playing on probably the most well coached and well balanced team we have had around here in a dozen years. I hope he takes full advantage of it and throws the doors off the place.

Keasly, Geno was loved off the bat here with his first year. Geno eventually wears thin everywhere he has gone.
He has the mentality of a 3 year old. He has no one to blame but himself for this.
Has nothing to do with circumstances or other players and everything to do with him.
