Wait. I thought Schneider didn't care about the offensive line? First he uses a first round pick and now this?!? I'm so confused.
I mean he's getting better and deserves a lot of credit for refocusing on the line. But 2-3 quality moves doesn't erase an entire decade of drafting and scouting misses and mistakes.

Not sure where the confusion lies. He sucked at addressing o-line with a BOTTOM 25-32 ranked o-line for YEARS, and now he's getting better at it.

I like it! Seems team friendly while still giving him the bucks. We don't know all the deets yet, of course, but it sounds good.

Some may not remember, but he was better than Cross in his rookie season. If that knee is solid going forward, our O-line might be stabilized for a couple of years. Young and talented, with some of them still on their cheap rookie deals.

I think Mike and Klint leaned in on JS for this move. :)

Our OL is much better as a whole when Lucas plays. Problem is he has been sidelined a lot with an ongoing persistent injury. The medical reports and his physical condition must be really positive for this deal to be made.

I hope the best for Lucas. Just such an incredible challenge to come back from an injury

I heard Brock Huard say the deal is "just shy of $20 million guaranteed." But he didn't give any details outside of that.

I wonder if there was someone else involved during that time in the decision making who maybe isn't with the organization anymore 🧐.

This seems unfair. As GM his responsibility is to acquire players that fit the profile(s) desired by his coaches. In the last 10 years we've had 5 different offensive coordinators.

What has been our offensive identity during that time? Bevell turned us into a finesse team all while paying lip service to wanting to run the ball. Schottenheimer and Waldron both found out the hard way that what their HC and QB wanted were two different things, and of course the guy taking the snaps had the ultimate veto.

Pete was all about second chances, but it meant he let people circumvent his vision and do their own thing for too long. Now that we have a HC who is uncompromising on his offensive vision, poof! -- like magic -- our OL play improves.

I don't see this as JS getting better -- the only new guy on this OL is Zabel -- it's that the players he's been drafting are finally being used as intended.

Yeah, that probably covers the first season, with add on roster bonuses down stream. Throw in some incentives for playing time and etc and we're golden.

Based purely on his play thus far, I don't see Cross as a Top Tier tackle. Probably not even Top Ten, and certainly not Top Five. Considering what he would command on the open market, and the premium the position commands, I can see Schneider dealing Cross in a sign + trade deal, tagging him for a year, or just letting him walk. Unless he takes a large step forward this year, he isn't the caliber of player that Schneider typically rewards with a 2nd contract. He whiffs too much on speed rushers around the edge for what he is going to want to demand on his next contract.
The risk is though that if he balls out this year in the new scheme then his price also goes up vs possibly getting him at a cheaper rate now.

Was going to respond this, but scrolled through to see if someone beat me to it.

I felt the same (but was weighing if he was worth the spot he was drafted) and went to check his overall rankings, he's a top 10-15 tackle and has had some pretty $#!++y coaching schemes to deal with. I'd say he's better than what we've seen, and will only get better with a better staff AND players around him. Worth hanging onto.

Not to mention, he was extended on his rookie contract and has another full season to prove he is worth top 5-10 money as a left tackle. Most teams would kill for a blind side tackle as good as Cross. We have high standards here, based on one of the best ever in Walter Jones. Cross doesn't have to be that good, but he could be close.
