After living in the mountains of Alaska and Montana for most of my life, I’ve become pretty comfortable with road conditions like this.

The big difference between my Audi and the various pickups I’ve driven is that the Audi doesn’t give you any warning. It can do a lot more than the trucks, but the margin near the edge of control is razor thin. You have to read the road for yourself. I keep my trucks in 2wd because you can feel the road conditions as they change. You get lots of warning.

Made it across Stevens, no problem.

Helps that I take this thing out to play a lot. I encourage my kids to do the same. Donuts in vacant parking lots are great way to learn how to control your car in ice and snow.

I have some great stories of sliding and spinning fire trucks and engines, from my time in Alaska. That shit is scary.

Good to hear! So, have you ever tried Firestone Blizzack tires on that Audi? I started putting them on my Subarus after having them on a rental car during an Iowa winter way back when. I was disappointed with how I couldn't get the car to slide on the ice and snow. No fun, just traction. I actually stopped and got a set on my '05 Legacy GT on the same day I went to the Monday Night 'Frozen Tundra of CenturyLink' game against Green Bay. (In '06?) Terrible traffic on icy roads driving home afterwards, but while other people had to take a number and wait in line to go in the ditch I just drove with no drama. At a reasonable speed, of course!

Love the Blizzaks. We run them on my kids S5. I like the Haks a little better for the black ice I drive on, but the Blizzaks are probably a better tire when all winter conditions are considered.

After driving across Stevens, on the way into Seattle, and Snoqualmie, on the way out, then on through Lookout, in Montana, I had the following thought.

Seattle passes - decent conditions. Easy driving. CHAINS REQUIRED. Montana passes - challenging. Cars off in ditches on both sides. Multiple rollovers. No warnings. No chains or traction tires required.
