Why do it now?

Because Stanton and Dipoto are feeling the heat more and more as the season continues to spiral out of control, and they probably think that making Servais the scapegoat / sacrificial lamb now will take some of that heat off of them and appease disgruntled fans that want to see heads roll...

...and they're probably right despite the fact that this season is a direct result of the moves they made last off season.

I think it's more of a we like Dan, let's give him a shot, if he falls on his face then we'll continue the search.

Let's give him a chance. He's a Mariner great, might be just what the team needed.

Perhaps no managing experience, but don't forget, tons of baseball experience, both on the field (1,299 games over 14 seasons in the majors) and as a commentator/analyst/broadcaster. On the field includes years of manning the plate as a catcher, frequent communication with a bunch of different pitchers, occasionally directing teammates on the field, and having front-row seats to Lou Piniella's (and others) coaching. Could serve him well as a manager.

Look I like Dan Wilson as much as the next guy I just feel like this was a rushed decision. That's all. Let him finish the season and then at least do a search of qualified individuals. Having said that I definitely wish him the best its just that none of the timing makes sense.

Dan and Edgar will be in the dugout the rest of the year. I'm guessing theres not enough time to turn it around this season with 30 something games left and the fact Rojas somehow still plays everyday, but Dan and Edgar in the dugout sounds really good.

The Mariners are the only team that has never made it to the World Series. But before we get harsh and judgmental about it, they've only had 47 years to do it.

Such a Mariners hire. I'm not against hiring Dan Wilson, I just dislike they didn't go through the entire hiring process. Why not just name him an interim, see what's out there in the offseason, and if they think he is the most qualified guy, then they remove the interim tag. Just feels really lazy, reminds me when the Colts hired Jeff Saturday who had zero experience and that came out of nowhere.

Stanton would rather pay Dan Wilson pennies compared to an actual manager, typical Mariners.

Why do it now? At least wait and maybe interview people that may be more qualified that actually have coaching experience. I wish Dan the best but I don’t agree with this decision.
Disgruntled fans, sports radio and sport writers may have been a factor....after all it's been an implosion of up by 10 games and now down by 5.

This is not all on Servais of course, but after 9 years.....

And Dipoto.....his hands are tied.

But remember the movie Office Space when the "Bobs" interview Lumbergh......

"How much time do you spend on those TPS reports?"

The "why do it now" wasn't for firing Servais. Probably should have been done weeks ago. It was for permanently hiring Dan Wilson right now. At least wait until offseason and do a search. And if he ended up being the best candidate great. But at least do a search. And they didn't.

Totally agree with both of you. Go through the process and if you come to the conclusion that Dan Wilson is your guy, then great. But don't just forgo the entire search for a new manager altogether.

But hey, Wilson has a connection to the M's glory days. You know, back when they never made it to a World Series let alone won one.

The fact he has ties the Mariners would be more reason not to hire him. We are an awful baseball franchise, we probably should have looked elsewhere.

You wouldn't need to go through the entire hiring process with Wilson since he's been with the team for so long already. Same with Edgar. These guys were already with the team, just not in the dugout. This may have been an idea for awhile and were just waiting for the green light. I don't absolutely love it but with Edgar by his side it makes sense.

The Mariners want to sell the public that they're true WS contenders while not commiting to bringing in the pieces to put them over the top. The people in the front office aren't going to fire themselves.

They're like the Oakland A's without having any of the A's success.

Moneyball, baby. Best sports film (one of) because even people who weren't baseball fans liked it.
If they aren't going to spend ok great then find guys who make contact and get on base. Have starters go deeper into games, too. A's had 3 starters go 200IP that year. (Were pitchers on juice? Clemens was for sure). I know pitchers across the league don't go deeper into games anymore but I don't care, when a pitcher is dealing and he's under 100 pitches leave the dude in the game.

Right, but personally I think that kind of thing should usually not be applauded. It reeks like just hiring your buddy cause you like him and promised him the job. As opposed to going out, putting in the legwork, and actually hiring the best person for the job.

Instead we hired the easiest, likely cheapest guy. Ms cheap ownership strikes again.
