Odd that a month ago we restructured Geno but he wouldn’t anoint him the starter, even though we had no other QB competition in the roster. Then we trade for Howell and suddenly Geno is the starter and Howell is the backup. Makes me wonder what went wrong. Did John put his foot down? Did they take a shot at a different QB and lose out? Did Geno find pics of Macdonald in a compromising position? Is Howell THAT bad? What has changed?
I wonder if not anointing him the starter was leverage to get Lock under contract.

Did someone mention nucleus and Geno Smith in the same sentence ? Lmfao
Naming Smith the starter is like buying that girlfriend you want to break up with a Christmas present. Wasteful .
Fun fact: in 10 seasons, Geno Smith is 0-1 as a playoff QB. So it's safe to make plans in January with your wife.
OK Know-it-all Who You Got that's BETTER >>AND<<IS AVAILABLE?...I can say without a shred of doubt that your answer is NO ONE.
JS., MM., & RG K-N-O-W where they stand, and WITHOUT QUESTION Geno is THEIR BEST OPTION at this juncture.
OH AND, if Geno is your idea of a "Girlfriend"?!? You have issues LOLOLOLOL

Chronological events explain it to me. No commitment to starter prior to Locks departure. Two quarterbacks on hand to chose from with team familiarity.

Post Lock's departure, only one QB with team experience ... Geno is named the starter. The new guy Sam is will play catch up as he becomes familiar with his new team. Makes sense that he starts as the primary back up.

Seems rather straight forward to me.
Yeah - way I read it as well.

Too parsing and trying to find meaning where it doesn't have to exist.

Not everything is profound.

Coaches are new, coming in prior to free agency, having a room that isn't settled, things are more fluid

Now the room is 2 deep, through the heart of free agency into the draft - more is known

Geno has been here, knows the team, has relationships and wasn't bad to the point where you have to replace him

No need to create uncertainty or controversy and instability

It's his job...... Until it isn't

It's up to Sam, or whoever else may come in, to build their own relationships, execute the off-season and do things well enough to give the coaches something to think about

If Howell, or someone else, plays well enough the competition (and potential controversy) will emerge naturally and be addressed then - no need to create it prior to someone emerging and creating their own opportunity

I think we should probably acknowledge that this is good news for Sam Howell.

It'd be malpractice to have Sam immediately coming into a quarterback competition. The guy needs some seasoning. He took nearly 70 sacks last year, and that wasn't just the fault of the Washington OL. Jacoby Brissett came in and immediately had that offense functional again, taking no sacks in his action and putting up near perfect numbers.

Sam Howell is not a functional quarterback at this point. As much as many want to move on from Geno due to a perceived lack of ceiling, the answer isn't to rush Sam into action. Sam has potential but he needs to be reworked before he can even begin moving in the right direction again.

Sam Howell is not close to the quarterback Geno Smith is at this point in time. He could get there eventually. It serves no one to put on some sort of performative camp battle just to set Sam up for another professional setback.

I could've seen a more open competition had Lock been retained. It doesn't make sense with Sam, though.

PC called Smiths number well ahead of that camp ; which meant that Lock was riding the pine before he found his locker . No real competition amongst the players for starting positions seem wrong to me .

That's purely a conspiracy at this point and doesn't jive with any of the actual events of that 2022 camp.

Geno is a bonehead.

He won't learn the Grubb's college level offensive scheme by week 1.

Expect Howell or Penix to start at QB for week 1.

Are you saying that Smith might be more comfortable at at a high school level football scheme ? Kinda harsh .

In fairness , bringing up the point , that the new OC is a college level coach , is a fair point .

We're here in this situation because Geno came in cold after like 6 years on the bench and did well in year 1 of Waldron's tenure here, in an offense which was built for a quarterback entirely different from him in almost every single way.

I don't know where people get this "Geno can't learn football" crap, as if he's been clueless out there and was a Waldron baby who has only ever known one offense.

If we're talking about the coordinator, sure. I don't see why Grubb coaching in college makes his offense somehow impossible for Geno Smith to learn, especially considering he's one of the most prolific college passers in recorded history.
