Been digesting his press conference and reading former players/staff kind words for Pete. It's amazing the impact he has made over the past ~15 years, not only on the football field but in their personal lives. Mentor, father figure, always supporting his guys. His belief system is to make every individual achieve their potential and support them as much as he possibly can. People with his character aren't common, especially in a sport that tends to promote the 'asshole' attitudes who crushes your guys if you don't do your best. Pete takes that as a lesson and helps you grow from it. He's really an amazing human.
It's clear he didn't want this to be his last year in Seattle but he immediately points to how excited he is for JS to get his opportunity as the head guy. There was certainly some snark about 'good luck' being on his own for the first time in 14 years (something JS hasn't been coy about wanting), though I think he genuinely wants him to do well. He was honest for the first time in forever that his team just didn't have the edge he wanted anymore, something we've all been complaining about. So I think even if he didn't want this to be it, he understands why it happened. That said, there's no way Pete will be an advisor. His answers today were clear he was caught off guard and it was just a respectful way of letting him down. Heading to LA as the Chargers coach, getting full control of a talented but leaderless organization for a couple years back in a city he loves, seems like a good fit for his final years.
We will see what happens, although Pete hasn't been able to get the team over the hump for 5-6 years and the team felt like it was trending in the wrong direction, having a HOF coach with an 8+ win floor is something rare in the NFL. I think a change was ultimately needed but we're in uncertain times for the first time in a long time.
