No need to dispair...our earlier defenses were for a different era of football. We kept our defenses simple with our opponent often saying...Oh look! The Seahawks are in Cover 3...AGAIN! We didn't need to "fool" our opponents...we had athletic "killers on the loose" operating at a high level putting pure dread into many TE's saying...look at me I'm a receiver! *BAM* Now looking up from the ground...*What hit me??* Kam without even needing a grin. Michael Bennett was asked by a reporter what made the Seahawks so good at that time...he responded defenses who love to tackle were becoming a dying breed...but we have many players who LOVE to tackle! I've always remembered his response as a favorite memory.

The NFL has really changed from then...with many rule Tweaks/enforcements all designed to "tip the scales" strongly to the offense...particularly to the passing game...making the middle of the field "open Season".
The middle of the field used to be an area of the field with a "posted" sign: WARNING This field patrolled by safeties and Linebackers...enter at your own peril !

Do you think College Football players with an eye to playing in the NFL don't realize there's "money" in the WR position? Many of your best college athletes have flocked to the WR position flooding the NFL with deep WR drafts. Some of these athletes might have been RB or cornerbacks in a different era. John Schneider knew this early enough to take advantage moving up in two different drafts to nab Rocket (Lockett) and DK and now with our own 1rst rd pick...took Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Pete can be blamed for being in denial of what the NFL offenses were getting away with...he witnessed our own "non-traditional" QB flourish as the rules quickly transformed the passing landscape...and it speaks volumes of RW's skillset to not even take advantage of the middle of the field...perhaps his stature hindered exploiting the middle. RW did quite well when forced to wear a leg brace and stay in the pocket...but it must have seemed like torture to such a famed escape artist.

KNJ bore the brunt of our fan bases ire as he tried to make fuller use of a Bear Front with mixed results...we needed a different skill set of athletic players and "dropping" Carlos Dunlap or Kerry Hyder into "coverage" looked extreme and ridiculous to many *I'm raising my hand as well*

Pete has lately been welcoming change outside of his normal "comfort zone" making full use of a coaching "change" teaming a promoted Clint Hurtt with an old "3-4" pal Sean Desai adding an injection of a young tactician Karl Scott while welcoming back a WR Guru Sanjay Lal to continue "polishing" DK Metcalf.

Times are changing...Pete might be labeled a dinosaur...but perhaps a DNA enhanced Jurassic Park version "about to be unleashed" in 2023

Post those emojis again after the season when Geno is once again one of the most sacked QB's in the league, the team is still hovering around the .500 mark, the defense struggles for at least a half a season or more, and another common early bounce in the post season, if they even make it, happens again.

You wont. You'll ignore the black and white and shout from the rafters your usual battle cry - "Just wait till next year" when its been the samething over and over for a decade now.

speaking of old, only issue i would have with PC is that the man is in his 70’s.
He’s a great coach, but man the NFL season is a grind like nothing else in professional sports.
The man dosent seem to age though, perhaps the dude is just immune to that grind factor.
If Bezos buys the team sometime after May 2024 I don’t see PC as the head coach, fresh leadership comes in at that point.

Take a flying f^(# at a rolling donut, and it's >TOO< quiet, TOO cold, TOO much, like it's TOO much negative sh*t that you are always posting, If someone posts something that they perceive as a positive, it never fails that you rush in and do your dead level best to quash away any of their 'Feel Good'.

Forge ahead with your feel good and ignore those that can't.
Something about "it takes all kinds" to make the world go around.
I don't feel that repeating something someone said about themself constitutes a personal attack.

Lets just say I don't exactly disagree with Pittpnthers but I'm more on the fence and waiting to see if Geno is for real or just Geno.

He has no excuses because he has what should be a top 5 offense and a good quarterback can win with that despite shite defense in the current NFL.

Nice post. Its refreshing to see Geno in post game interviews...he offers no excuses and points no fingers. He exudes confidence and shoulders blame. Pete has to be smiling to give Geno the QB "stage".

I'm not saying Russ doesnt take his fair share of sacks. He's a scrambling QB and it happens. I'm saying every QB under a Pete Carroll coached team gets sacked a lot. Smith was sacked 46 times last season. One of the most sacked QB's in the league and that was without his #1 receiver missing any time. Carroll just does not put a high emphasis on the Oline. When Wilson asked for help on the line, Pete brought in Gabe Jackson and that was it. I truly believe that drafting Eskridge over Humphries was the final nail in the coffin for Wilson.

Do you know who was the most sacked QB in the league last year pitt? I bet you do.

Your narrative is wrong. I've just proven that Wilson was one of the most sacked QB's in college, and was #1 last year in Denver. It literally has nothing to do with his lines, or his coach. It's how he plays the position.

It's him. Game over dude. Move on to another bad narrative. This well's dry.

Ok Sarge, what's the answer for all the other QB's under Carroll that have taken a tremendous number of sacks? Its not about Wilson at this point, its about all of them. The point i'm making is that it doesnt matter who the QB is. If Pete Carroll is your coach, your going to get sacked and your going to get sacked a lot.

Wasn't it 'black and white' last offseason that we had a 4 win team and that Geno was one of the worst starters in the league?

"all the other QB's?" As in the ONE other QB other than Russell over the past 12 seasons?

You're going to need a MUCH larger sample size to convince anyone of this false narrative pitt. If Russell wasn't sacked in college, or went to Denver and had amazing protection and his sack numbers dropped drastically? You'd have a leg to stand on.

But you don't.

That was the narrative that the Wilson fans & Pete haters were hoping would take place, as they could then say 'See, we told you that it was all on Pete Carroll and his crappy Coaching & not Russ for hanging onto the ball for too long'
Geno winning CBPOTY and making it to the Pro Bowl must have galled them to no end.

Why would it make people mad? Geno was our QB and was damn good. That equals a better team and more wins.
It's not about who's right or wrong. Shoot, being wrong about a guy who has a great season for your team? Best tasting crow you could have.
I was one of many that was wrong about Geno. And hopefully he's even better in 2023. The last guy is long gone, thankfully. Going on 16 months.

Go Hawks, Go Pete and Go Geno!

Was Wilson one of the most sacked qb's in college? This what i found in his final season. I made a list of all the top qbs and including his draft class. I added Geno too.

Russell Wilson
2011 - 1.7 sack ranked 55

Geno
2012 - 1.9 ranked 57

Draft class
RG3
2011 - 2.3 ranked 81

Luck
2011 - 0.8 ranked 8

Ryan Tannehill
2011 - 0.7 ranked 3

Top young QBs
Mahomes
2016 - 2.5 ranked 93

Watson
2016- 1.4 ranked 22

Josh Allen
2017 2.2 ranked 70

Lamar Jackson
2017 - 2.5 ranked 97

Murray
2018 - 1.4 ranked 22

Burrows
2019 - 2.2 ranked 78

Herbert
2019 - 1.9 ranked 58

Hurts
2019 - 1.8 ranked 40

Trevor Lawrence
2020 - 1.7 ranked 37

Wilson seem to do better then most of the QBs listed or at least on par. Its funny how Luck & Tannehill were barely sacked in college, but i think Tannehil led the league in sack one year. Luck got sacked a bunch too.

A good share. I suspect Russel's stature is a partial role in sack accumulation ...being forced away from pockets not designed to hold their structure much beyond 2 sec...RW buys time with his legs and body control due to a strong focus on physical conditioning.
Sadly he lost his longtime personal trainer and close friend in 2021...it may account for his physical and mental struggles since then in addition to age creep.

Once a QB leaves the pocket he becomes a runner as far as ref "protection" and the O-line suffers because ref focus also changes for a bailing QB...holding becomes quickly an issue.

But the sacks under Pete is also a reflection of him drilling in the QB need to prevent turnovers...if you can't escape the rush or throw away to the sidelines you are expected to take the sack...not risk a forced throw. Geno also knows how to keep out of Pete's doghouse. All coaches expect it...Pete demands it and the players like Pete so guess what? more sacks
