Oh c'mon. The Seahawks need to send a clear message that he deserves to suffer more than just a couple of friends dying. It obviously is not enough.
Getting passed by the Seahawks at #5 and getting drafted instead by the Lions at #6 is somehow going to teach him that lesson?

That seems to be what at least one poster thinks.
Yeah, I don't get it. It's not the Seahawks' job to be the administrator of life-lesson justice. It's the Seahawks' job to improve the team. And in my opinion, the single most team-improving move they can make in the draft is to draft Jalen Carter.

I want players drafted who LOVE football, who want to be the best they can be, who are going to make sure that it's nothing about their effort that's going to stop them from being the best they can be.

That's football character to me.
You would love Clark Phillips in the 2nd round.

How do we know he doesn’t love football?

I remember when Beast Mode was a malcontent in Buffalo, who got into trouble off the field. only to become a leader in Seattle.

After what I called football character comes things like sheer talent and measurables that your imagination can project with. I don't know Phillips, but when it comes to football character I think of guys like Bryce Young, Kancey, Witherspoon, JL Skinner, Will Anderson...guys that you know just LOVE football. It's evident in their tape and interviews.

If they take Carter I'll cheer for him.

But a team shouldn't have to gamble on someone with the 5th pick in the draft.
A team gambles with EVERY pick in every draft, history has proven there are no sure things. it's the luck of the draw no matter what their potential might appear to be.

Not saying that the racing incident wasn't terrible, but I just want to defend some of the more baseless attacks on Jalen Carter's character.

First, Todd McShay's suggestion that Carter doesn't get along with his teammates was without attribution and hasn't been confirmed by others. McShay, an ESPN draft "expert" and former sideline reporter is hardly an investigative journalist. He has been criticized for other baseless character attacks on other draft prospects, like JSN. McShay had his own personal problems leading to a recent leave of absence from ESPN.

On the other hand, positive things about Jalen Carter have been ignored, like Bruce Feldman's article in the Athletic about how Carter paid for all the meals of a walk-on player who didn't have money to cover his meals.

And as for the big pro day "struggles," it's been reported that GMs who were there said he did fine, and that it was no big deal. Carter had already said that he wasn't going to run the 40 or do the other things like the cone drill. He was only doing position drills, and stopped when he experienced cramping, which is a reasonable thing to do. As others have said, you don't expect him to be at his best after what he'd been through at that point. Most of the articles about the pro day don't provide much in the way of specifics, and is just piling on and beating a young man when he's down.

Just my two cents. And I think the Seahawks take him at #5.

The Lions keep talking about him in positive terms.

About his visit they said that they now have a better picture of him and also in the Combine there was an interview with a teammate where they learned a very interesting thing about Carter that makes him look different (no info if positive or negative).

I wonder if they really like him or if they want to pressure us to definitely take him at 5.

My dream scenario would be that picks 1-4 are Anderson, Wilson, Young and Stroud and the Raiders give us a 2nd round pick for the 5. The Lions pass on Carter and we get him at 7 + a 2nd round pick.

Maybe the Lions think Carter is the second coming of Ndamakong Suh.

Point taken. Yes ALL draft picks are a gamble . I think you know what I mean
though. Example:

Will Anderson was SEC defensive player of the year (twice?) And a Chuck Bednarik award winner. No real injury history that I'm aware of .

Jalen Carter has all these skills and size yet is out of shape , getting in a little trouble, won't talk to any team out of the top 10 Etc..

Which one is a bigger "gamble" if you're a GM ?

I kinda think, at that point, we have only to wait and see who is available at 5 and the decision will be made for us, that takes all the pressure off. If both are still on the board (Yes I tend to fantasize occasionally) then I chicken out and go with P&J's decision as I know they have done vast amounts of research on both players. I will cheer on any decision they make, I would only be disappointed if they go for a QB, but could probably learn to live with it. I want a NASTY defense..!

We’re the ones who are going to have to impart to Jalen that everyones done with him sacrificing personal performance over personal crises after we selected him as we would have had the racing never occurred and had he showed out at the pro day.

Which he didn’t.
