Comments welcome. The initial "what if?" in this one was to see what the roster might look like if we signed Geno to a $90m/3yr deal.

Diggs and Adams are being kept in this version. Releasing them in 2023 only makes sense as post-June cuts. We tend to avoid those for both player reasons and long-term cap management reasons. The focus here is on building through the draft and increasing the talent level of the team in each year going forwards, rather than going too all in on 2023 and sabotaging 2024.

Early decisions
1. Resign Geno 3 yrs/$90mil (25m/30m/35m). Reasonable deal given the alternative of a $32m franchise tag.
2. Keep Diggs and Adams for one more year. We can get $20m of cap savings by cutting them in 2024, so adding youth to the safety position now makes sense.
3. Release Gabe Jackson, Al Woods and Quenton Jefferson. Woods will unfortunately be turning 36 and only played 39% of our snaps last season despite being our best DT by a mile.
4. Extend Harris, Nwosu and Brooks. We could backload these significantly to pick up a lot of cap savings. I'd rather do a minor backload to get $7m of cap relief next year without damaging our future cap too much.

Resign our RFA/ERFA
Ryan Neal (RFA), Michael Jackson (ERFA), Jon Rhattigan (ERFA), Myles Adams (ERFA), Godwin Igwebuike (ERFA), Cody Thompson (ERFA)

Resign a few of our UFAs, or similar cost players
Drew Lock $2m, Phil Haynes $2m, Jason Myers $3.5m, Kyle Fuller $1.5m, Tanner Muse $1m (no RFA), Tyler Ott $1.3m

Trading down in the draft
Mocked using PFN and trying to make fair trades only. In this scenario Anderson and Stroud were both off the board at pick #5 so I wanted to trade down and take Simpson. The Raiders wanted to move from #7 to #5 for Young, and then the Packers moved from #15 to #7 for Myles Murphy. Luckily Simpson was still at #15, and I used the excess draft capital to trade up in the middle rounds.

#15 Trenton Simpson, ILB
#20 Brian Branch, S
#31 O'Cyrus Torrence, OG
#37 John Michael Schmitz, OC
#45 Ika Siaki, NT
#52 Calijah Kancey, DT
#63 Zach Charbonnet, RB
#83 Jack Campbell, ILB
#95 Will MacDonald IV, DE
#120 Jonathan Mingo, WR

90 man roster
1673986714502

Thoughts

Nothing done here to address QB long-term or our outside pass rush, so we would be counting on our existing OLBs improving and Geno having a good couple of years. Starting a rookie OC and RG together is always dangerous, but both of these players are much more polished than the typical college lineman.

LB group would go from a weakness to a strength. Both Simpson and Campbell play with tremendous effort and would bring back physicality to the middle of the defense. Branch would be getting snaps all over this year, probably a lot at nickel CB, and then would take Quandre's spot next year.

Siaki gives us an immovable run defender at 0/1 tech, while Kancey is undersized but has enormous upside at 3tech. MacDonald will probably fall at the combine a bit but has outstanding length to play 4/5 tech although it may take some time in the weight room for him to develop.

Nice work.

WR - I'd like to see Goodwin back at WR3 unless Young beats him for that spot. Thought he had a good rapport with Geno, and was clutch in some situations. Eskridge, if he can become that horizontal threat, YAC guy this offense needs to be more dynamic, then I'm ok with giving him ONE more year. Too bad Bo Melton was poached. Maybe he could have been that guy.

RB - Wouldn't mind bringing Penny back for cheap. Really like his running style and the offense would have been much better this season with him. The injury wasn't his fault (dirty Saints player, IIRC). I wouldn't mind adding a bruiser type for 3rd and short either. Dallas and K9 are a bit underwhelming on 3rd and short situations.

Filled a lot of positions through the draft, looks good. Calijah Kancey at #52 seems like a steal. Not sure how I feel taking an ILB so high though, but as long as he's the BPA, sounds good.

Can't really see them keeping both Diggs and Adams with their current deals, $36M cap hit combined for 2023. Especially if they draft Branch.

That OL would have top 10 potential for sure.

We still need to draft a qb, in case Geno regresses or Lock isn't an option.

What if Lock is a option ? He would save us millions this year alone. Say we draft a max Duggen and start with Lock ?
Saving maybe 50 million dollars.

Geno lacks a desire to wins games, not woth what your willing to pay.

My 02 cents.

I would too, but was thinking he'd get about $3m somewhere and just couldn't fit it in. He did provide key leadership to that room which would be missed.

Which QB would you like in place of which pick? We should know about Lock well ahead of the draft in late April.

I do see them moving on from both in 2024, but we don't get much of that cap back if we release them now. We'd gain $10m from cutting Diggs, but his valuation was higher than that this season and I think they value his leadership in particular.

Lock is a wildcard for sure. If the competition really was close last August then there has to be some real optimism around him. My concern with him as an option A is that I don't think we've seen him be careful enough with the football yet.

like the writeup. hope to see more of these in the future.

my thoughts

1) i don't think JS will pay geno 3/90. more like 3/75 ish with 50 guaranteed. they let him walk above 3/80 and seek cheaper / younger alternatives. perhaps this is trivial.

2) i'd be good with that draft overall. trenton simpson and branch are both playmakers and good tacklers. campbell is a stud backer. i really want kancey and siaki, however, i don't think siaki / kancey will make it that far. i think both get selected in the 30's. charbonnet is a good player, but i think that a physical runner is more of what PC will seek, ala chris carson. also i think wr>rb bigger need right now. don't think torrence is a good fit either. our guards have to be able to pull and move in space. that remains to be seen with the 6'6 350lb behemoth. also, i'm betting JS will pick a QB sometime this draft regardless of geno re-signing or not.

3) doubt they extend brooks at this point. doubt they even pick up his option. they will attack mlb in free agency / draft

4) agree that they wait till 2024 to release diggs / adams. for various reasons.

Love the mock draft, but Kancey is zooming up the draft boards, and may even be gone at #20. 2nd coming of Aaron Donald and all that, some people are thinking.

I don't think Geno lacks desire; if anything, he tries too hard and presses and makes mistakes as a result. IMO today's Geno would have won a Lombardi with that 2013 team. (the 2013 Geno, not so much) Geno isn't holding the Hawks back. Now he may not be elevating the team like a Patrick Mahomes does, but then does anyone else in the NFL do what Mahomes does?

I think this would be a solid draft but I don't know if it's smart to trade out of the top 10. Equally, I don't know if a player like Trenton Simpson would be worthy of a top 15 selection. I personally think he is not. I actually think the Seahawks should stay pat at #5 and select one of the top 5 players in the entire draft.

#5: Stay at this pick and select Devon Witherspoon. People would want an edge rusher here but the reality is Tyree Wilson, Myles Murphy, Lucas Van Ness aren't going to be as impactful as Witherspoon right away. If you trade out of the #5 pick, I think the Lions would probably run to the podium to get him. D.W would probably start at LCB from day 1. He is a legit top 5 player in this draft. This is the right move in my opinion. I still think the team should be building the roster and that means getting talented players no matter what. Witherspoon and Woolen is freaking double trouble man.

Witherspoon is definitely entertaining to watch and of course half of the fun is just seeing how everybody pans out. I see him as a really high production college player but not an ideal fit for the traits we look for. He's a handsy, feisty, Jalen Ramsey type who is better in a man scheme and my guess is he's going to end up smaller at the combine than he's officially listed at right now. At the same time, this coaching staff has been excellent at finding and developing toolsy corners who fall in the draft with limited college production.

I'd still jump to take Witherspoon later on, but for value I'd gamble on another of the traits guys who seem to match our system. Maybe Stevenson, Brents, Rush, or Johnson, all of whom were at the Senior Bowl.

I'm also expecting to see Tre Brown re-enter the competition at left CB. There was a ton to like about him before the injury and people have been recovering better from patella tendon tears over the last 5-10 years.

I don't think the Hawks have enough money to give Geno, and to re-sign those players.

I would really like to see them Draft a Quarterback Regardless of what transpires with the Geno or Lock foofaraw gig.
Some Quarterback needs to be developing behind Geno, or whoever the hell our QB is for the next couple years.
