So I hear the media reference the last 5 games for the Hawks and Niners. So I was curious just exactly how they really stack up vs each other stat wise and who they have played.
To start with;
The Hawks have scored 100 points and allowed 60 for a point differential of +40
The Niners have scored 136 points and allowed 105 for a point differential of + 31
So let's break down the passing game;
The Hawks have averaged 157 (ouch) yds a game, thrown 4 TDs, and 4 INTs. This is where it gets interesting. The Seahawks have faced the 7th, 10th, 14th, 19th, and 2nd ranked pass defense, for an average of the 10th ranked pass defense. They have faced the 5th, 8th, 6th, 15th, and 4th overall defense, for an average of the 8th ranked overall defense.
The Niners have averaged 226 yds a game, thrown 7 TDs, and 1 INT. The Niners have faced the 17th, 21st, 14th, 24th, and 6th ranked pass defense, for an average of the 16th ranked pass defense. They have faced the 17th, 27th, 6th, 25th, and 2nd ranked overall defense, for an average of the 15th ranked overall defense.
So the Hawks have had a worse passing game but have faced significantly better defenses. The Hawks have faced 4 teams in the top 15 of pass defenses and all 5 defenses faced are in the top 15 of overall defenses. To compare the Niners have faced 2 teams in the top 15 of pass defense and 2 teams in the top 15 of overall defense.
On to the running game;
The Hawks have averaged 121 yds a game and rushed for 5 TDs. They have faced the 4th, 14th, 1st, 9th, and 19th ranked rush defense, for an average of 9th ranked rush defense. The overall defense is the same as above.
The Niners have averaged 145 yds a game and rushed for 3 TDs. They have faced the 15th, 31st, 1st, 25th, and 2nd ranked rush defense for an average of 15th ranked rush defense.
So once again, we see the Niners have had better offensive numbers but unlike last time, they have faced only slightly worse defenses against the run.
Defense;
The Hawks have allowed an average of 201 yards of passing, 90 yards rushing, and forced 13 turnovers. They have faced the 30th, 19th, 13th, 27th, and 2nd ranked pass offense for an average of 18th ranked pass offense. They have faced the 3rd, 29th, 23rd, 19th, and 25th ranked run offense, for an average of 20th ranked rush offense. They have faced the 24th, 28th, 12th, 30th, and 4th ranked overall offense, for an average of 20th ranked overall offense.
The Niners have allowed an average 275 passing yards, 80 rushing yards, and forced 8 turnovers. They have faced the 32nd, 7th, 13th, 6th, and 29th ranked pass offense, for an average of the 17th ranked pass offense. They have faced the 22nd, 32nd, 23rd, 7th, and 11th run offense, for an average of the 19th ranked rush offense. They have faced the 32nd, 14th, 12th, 3rd, and 26th ranked overall offense, for an average of 17th overall offense.
They have faced almost identical offenses with a little edge going to the Niners for facing better offenses. The Hawks have faced 2 top 15 offenses, the Niners have faced 3 top 15 offenses.
So to recap, the Niners have had better offensive numbers but faced significantly worse defenses. The Hawks have had better defense numbers with an almost equal level of offensive competition. The argument could be made that the offenses are on an equal playing field but our defense is flat out better.
