The hawks can't tear up the contract and pretend it never existed, they can fire him at which point in time they are still on the hook for "guaranteed money" so he would get his guaranteed money. This is all part of the contract, they can cut him at anytime and only be contractually obligated to pay guaranteed money. He can quit at any time in which case does not get his guaranteed money, and cannot play for another team. This is all spelled out in the contract as is part of the contract.

I think that you're confusing people with that post.

There is no more guaranteed money owed to Marshawn. The last of his guaranteed money ($4.5M) was paid to him this past season. So the team can cut him today if they want and he has no more money coming to him.

However, his 2016 and 2017 prorated signing bonus of $5M stays on the team's salary cap books and counts as dead money once Marshawn is cut.

If he's cut before June 1st,, all $5M counts against the team's 2016 cap, which is likely what will happen.
