This game should have been painfully obvious to everyone...
WR, WR, TE.
Holy cow. RW had a ton of time in this game and our WRs can't do much of anything. Baldwin is a very good slot WR, but no DC is game-planning around him. For every great play Kearse makes, there are 3-4 routine plays he can't make (3rd down drop in the Q4 changed the game IMO). Matthews provided a glimpse of what a big body can do, but was his production a result of no game planning? I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and say he has a role, but I can't assume he is going to be "the guy" going forward. Lockette is what he is. Great special teams player that will provide a great play or 2, whilst making an equal amount of bone headed plays. Bryan Walters is a fair catch specialist, who quite frankly is a wasted active roster spot. Luke Willson is a lot like Jermaine Kearse, but does add a physical/athletic presence. Unfortunately, for every great play/game, he is equally a no show. Cooper Helfet is extending his life based on one great TD catch and being a charismatic Instagram presence.
Bottom line, we cannot keep being this feast or famine in the pass game. I understand we are a chunk play team in that regard, but how many 3 and outs have we seen happen, that could have been avoided/extended had we just had some consistency in the WR/TE corps?
My proposed Remedy:
R1: TE Maxx Williams - Guy looks exactly like the kind of consistent chain mover and occasional big play. This allows Luke Willson to be a true wild card and #2 TE.
R2: WR Phillip Dorsett - Speed, speed, speed. He's a far more advanced WR than given credit for. Yes, he is small but that speed is rare/elite. He could be a nightmare on scramble drills.
Yes, this game also showed the drop-off at CB, DL, DE. That said, EVERY team in the NFL is going to experience a dip in production when they lose that many starters. The reason I highlighted the receiving corps is because those are our main guys. That's a huge, huge issue. I'd love to have Pro Bowl caliber backups at DT/DE, but that's just not realistic. I think the OL has been unfairly ripped on this year and there's enough youth/continuity to expect a step up next year (assuming Carpenter is re-signed).
