Lol, even if its a joke you should be careful with that one. Im also Asian, Korean to be exact. In E. Asia there is a certain rivalry/animosity between Japan, Korea, and China, more so between Japan and the other two due to Japan's imperialism. I know you meant it as a joke and I personally dont mind it, but just letting you know there are certain Asians who would take that as a serious insult.

Might have different cultures from one another but you can't expect people to tell the difference unless they understand the language or know the culture...I watch some Korean and Japanese movies and I could only tell the difference from their language and alphabets. Also if people take their time they can tell which Asian is he/she by the last name. Also a lot of Japanese names ends with vowels. But if you give people a blind eye test in normal non traditional clothing and ask what "Asian is this person" I bet you that most people wouldn't/couldn't tell the difference between a Chinese, Korean & Japanese person..
