Pro Football Focus says per Twitter "Jairus Byrd is the player everybody thinks Earl Thomas is- the game's best single-high FS"

Any discussion about this?

Lately, I've read some things that people are group thinking our individual talent on defense...that they are only so good because of the sum of the parts.

Earl has been targeted in this thinking, in a few of the things I've read. That he is really good, but elevated (perception wise) because of how good the whole defense is. It's the same kind of lazy thinking that we heard about Russell Wilson last season - "he has a great running back and defense, so he doesn't have to do much". B.s.

I disagree with Byrd > Thomas. Earl has phenomenal range and allows us to do things elsewhere on the defense that most FS's wouldn't.

Byrd does not elevate the Bills defense.

Who?? ....just saying...

obviously I've heard of him but ET is ET for a reason. You have to understand, we are in the limelight now. People are going to talk about how great we are and talk about who "overrated we are" it comes with the territory. Just b/c one guy says something doesn't make anyone has to believe him. ET was my adopt a rookie and has been my favorite player on our team since. Call me a homer but he is the best Safety in the league. He was #1 in All-pro voting for the NFC last year, I believe 3 people were ahead of him all in the AFC. So now he is the best in the whole league. Best...in the whole league...he is....just saying....

Earl honestly is a little bit overrated though. He took a step back last season.

Do you say that because all the dropped interceptions or just his play in general? I think he has gotten better every year, minus the hands of stone last year.

IMO RW is the only player who's absence would hit our team harder than ETIII.

I wouldn't make that claim with Byrd even considering his weak Bills team.

I think people who say ET is 'overrated' are completely missing the fact that the reason Kam Chancellor is able to do what he does and browner and sherman are able to play jarring press coverage are because ET has amazing range and play recognition ability.

critique him over a couple dropped INT's if you want, the secondary is predicated on the fact that Earl Thomas is the keystone of the whole thing.

But who's better? Earl or Thomas? Tell us the truth, we're dying to hear it.

PFF has been pushing this line for awhile now, probably to break away from the pack a bit. Byrd is a great player, but he doesn't have quite the speed or range of Thomas, though they both have wonderful instincts.

Having done no research, Doesn't PFF use numbers and individual play breakdowns to grade their players?
So Im not sure if it is their opinion, or just based on their grading system.

Overrated? How? explain your self a little more . I seen a player who progressed as the year went on and improved on his catching. He could have had 10 picks! 10!!! He is the absolute corner stone of our defense.

I say - Earl Thomas will go down as the best safety to ever play.

How many of you have ever watched Jarius Byrd play? I know I havnt. So I have no clue if he's better than ET or not. But I know ET is pretty damn good.

Are you asking if people purposely watched a Buffalo Bills game that the Seahawks weren't whooping the mess out of 'em in?

Ive watched Jarius Byrd play. And he is an excellent safety. He reminds me a lot of ET. That being said, once you come down to the 2, its really just #1 and #2 and fan bias will always swap them.

I think PFF really missed teh long shot on this, and I think its because of some of the missed tackles and Interceptions that ET didnt make last year. But it also means, they completely undervalued his single high safety role that allows the corners to press as hard as they do. His ability to cover ground is just unseen.

The dropped picks were the least of my concers. He missed more tackles than almost every other safety. He also had very poor numbers in yards/snap and and receptions/snap. Yes, he is asked to do a lot. He's still top 3-5 but Weddle and Byrd are both better at this point. Reshad Jones might be too.

I have! He is really excellent, maybe second to Earl Thomas in my estimation in the league at FS. It would probably be Thomas, then Byrd, then Weddle in that positional ranking.

However, he just can't make the plays like ET did against Washington in the playoffs where he covered 3/4ths of the field to come over the top and make an INT. He doesn't have the speed or the innate ability/intelligence to route himself to the ball as efficiently.
