Robots are used by search engines botting the site. It's how all these pages get listed on search engines to find later.
Yeah like @Terry Love said, they are basically a program that search engines use to search over the site to show results crom the forum to show on their search engines. They are called robots(bots) and when they scan the site, that's called spidering the site.
