Jones is worth a lot to this defense but it isn't infinite. Once a player hits free agency they have a great chance of getting overpaid due to the
winner's curse. The player takes the best offer from all 32 teams while the odds are that the correct evaluation was somewhere in the middle.
I do like the trade for Jones in the short term. I'm not sure we could have evaluated anybody involved with the defense with a huge hole in the middle of it. Our schedule also ended up much easier than expected and we had a real opportunity to make the playoffs.
We should be extending more players and extending them earlier than we do in order to take advantage of the time value of money. Up front bonus payments benefit the players more than they cost us if we make smart choices.
