Worried about RW's future

I'm absolutely worried that he'll get hurt. But that is the name of the game in the NFL....everyone gets hurt.

He is smart to avoid many hits but any hit could be any players last. That's just how it is.

Watch a highlight reel of Russell Wilson running. Then watch a highlight reel of Michael Vick running (and even to a lesser extent Robert Griffin III). Major difference is those. Pay attention to how much Wilson is aware of his surroundings compared to the other two. Russell runs only when necessary and understands that he is the leader of this team and cannot take unneccesary risks that put him and his team in danger. He takes less major impact hits than any other "running QB" (this is something media geniuses continue say, so I'm throwing it in there even though I disagree with the reasoning) I've ever seen.

I'm not worried about Wilson when he runs, because he runs smarter than any QB in the league.

But I am worried about all the hits he's taking behind our terrible O-Line right now. WAY too many hits. Russell's young and durable right now, but as he ages it's going to take a toll.

Im not generally worried about it, but I am on Monday. Long lost his cool last game and I am sure the Rams would love nothing more than to even the odds in this game.

The Rams have had a pattern for years, regardless of coach, of selling out to hitting the QB. It usually and I mean nearly every time ends up failing as adjustments are made. But going back as far as 2006 the Rams have made it a ritual. They can be disruptive but I am concerned about the intentional low shot or late shot. They don't care, they were losing with Bradford, but now you can kiss the season goodbye and they are frustrated.

Outside of that, I just see Russell as generally careful, but it sure seems like a lot of players still try to put a hard hit on him when he slides. I have seen the forearm leading a few times.

Orlando, FL...for good.
Worrying about his body holding up is irrelevant, IMO. He avoids contact very well.

However, we have all seen bad offensive lines ruin quarterbacks over time in terms of the mental aspect of playing QB, which is everything. Look at Bulger in St. Louis, for one. I'm afraid that we might instill constant approaching footsteps in DangeRuss's head if we don't get him some consistently decent pass protection for next year. :(

I would be most pleased if the Hawks somehow got a blowout going on Monday and had the chance of resting RW in the 3rd quarter.

.

The Rams don't just sell out to hit the QB, every team does that. But they do sell out to be dirty, as Steve Smith commented on last Sunday. The Rams have long been known as one of the dirtiest teams in the league. So I hope the refs have a tight leash on all that nonsense so we escape St. Louis without serious injuries.

The Rams know their season's over, so it worries me that they'll take some zeal in getting in a couple frustrated cheap shots on their hated rival.

I think his fluid type of movement. the fact that when he runs out of bounds he keeps going instead of stopping, and his body type all help.

Wilson is short and muscular, lots of qbs are tall and lanky. Bradford is built like a bean pole with his knees being the largest part of his leg.

Put on a set of pads and throw yourself into a tall, thin pole. Now using the same pads throw yourself into a stump. Which one sustained more damage, besides yourself?

I know it isn't sexy, but I just think they simply MUST make Oline a major priority on draft day. They need to protect him better so he doesn't need to run or escape the pocket as much. He is young now and has amazing escapability, but that isn't a long term solution.
O line is also about offensive domination. We're getting Okung back maybe for the NO game and we'll be brutal again, maybe even one of the better o-lines in the league. This thing about Wilson scrambling on every play has a limited half-life.

Has he ever been hurt? The way he plays limits the risk of injury, from decision making to how he's avoiding/deflecting contact (thanks beast?).

On a side note, he's dishing out punishment? and ending careers.

Wilson runs fluidly, slides smartly, pirouettes nimbly, has an uncanny awareness of the location of the LOS and first down marker, is build compactly and not like an RG3-esque toothpick, knows how to pick up blockers, and can even reduce contact by pump-faking on the run in order to slow down incoming tacklers. I don't like him being out there scrambling all the time, but if anyone knows how to forestall potential injury, it's...

Wait, WHY DOES THIS THREAD EXIST???!!?!?! BAD JUJU!! EVERYONE KNOCK ON WOOD IMMEDIATELY!!! *starts punching holes in the nearest grandfather clock*

I worry more about something like this, more than an actual "hit".

Not my picture, but perfect illustration of my concern.

That's the one Aros pointed out as how close the team came to losing Wilson for the year.

Not worried.

He's Mighty Mouse, haven't you heard?

Yea, it may look like he's running around, but really he's flying around, just above the ground, gliding around opposing teams.

I am worried about the beating he is taking behind this line.

We gotta get this figured out or we will be sad fans.

It's pro football. Injuries are inevitable. I just hope none are major, not just for RW but all of our key players

Fran Tarkenton played 18 years and missed 8 games over the course of that career. He was almost exactly the type of QB that Wilson is, and he played in a time where QBs were nowhere near as protected.

And Wilson's got more muscle on him. In fact, I seem to recall reports that Wilson spent a lot of this offseason working on building muscle so he could better withstand the hits he'd take over the course of the season.

I'm not any more worried about him being injured running than I would be about him taking a hit in the pocket (lots of those non-running QBs have missed plenty of time, too).

Exactly. Not only did Wilson add muscle, it was all lower body/leg muscle he added.

There are just as many pocket QBs getting hurt this year than running QBs. Matter of fact, Newton, Wilson, RG3 and Kaepernick have been some of the healthiest guys over the season, and they all run the most. If you're a smart running QB, you can see it coming and get down or avoid the hit. Some of those hits in the pocket can get brutal, and you get rolled up on due to the nature of the tackle and then you can also get rolled into OLmen.

Does anyone else have the same concern as I, when it comes to RW and the possibility that his running could lead to a serious injury? .

yea but from most of the games I've seen this season not running might get him injured faster.

Honestly, the designed read-option keepers might be the safest plays we run in terms of keeping him away from contact. The only other time he runs is to avoid getting demolished by a rusher. The issue is protection, not his willingness to take off.
