The win probability for us was so low at the point of the kick that missing the onside hardly affects your probability of winning the game, whereas converting the onside holds massive upside potential.

Losing that onside probably loses you like, a single percentage point of WP.

You needed to stop them in a single set of downs anyway. Field position matters much less with that knowledge.

I would have kicked. A 1st down gained on 2nd or 3rd down and the game would be over. I'd rather have 2 bites at getting the ball back.

It was a bad coaching call. About a 5% chance of recovery. I think our odds were better for a defensive stop, even though we were pathetic against the run all game long.
