It occurred to me earlier that with all the hate on Bevells play calling, we may not be looking at the bigger picture. Last year, the playbook opened up for Russell after mid season. It was all under the assumption that this was done to ease him into the system. It worked great in the end because of our obvious offensive explosion. But there was more to it then that. Teams had a harder time scheming against us because we weren't showcasing the same stuff we did earlier in the season. Studying game film wasn't as easy for coaches, because the prior stuff wasn't as relevant.
We're 7-1 right now under a very pedestrian game plan the first 8 weeks. Everyone is calling for Bevells job, but this could easily be the plan all along. I know the mantra is one game at a time, but let's be honest here, looking ahead isn't a bad thing. Not playing all your cards can really help in the long run.
Case in point. Texans running almost the exact same plays every time they are in the same situations. Why we practiced the same bootleg play, and why we were able to counter it with a pick six.
I've been weary of the play calling myself. And I'm not saying he's perfect, but I wouldn't be surprised if down the stretch, things start "opening up" again.
And hell, we're 7-1 during this vanilla time.
