In the article the Seahawks are mentioned..."Two teams named often as potential candidates for Smith have been Tennessee at $35.8 million and Seattle. The Seahawks are well over the cap and not perceived as real factors."

Sure, we are down a few bucks, that's nothing a pen and losing some dead weight can't take care of.

He is a free agent so there is nothing to lose trade wise, young kid at 25 and I read that he didn't give up a sack last year. IMO, he is well worth a phone call by JS

There have been some YouTube videos on the subject of how the Hawks can get cap space among them was to extend both Geno and Metcalf which I expect the Seahawks will do. If the Seahawks wanted to they could get to $50 million under the cap

I am not on board to aquire Trey Smith. I question just how good he really is playing on the Chiefs

Gotta get Drew Dalman or Trey Smith is FA. Do whatever it takes.

I don't see JS going after Smith at all. We all know his views on IOL and Smith will be getting $20M/yr or more. We only have 3 players making that kind of money or more, DK, Geno and Big Cat. Also I noticed the top paid guards are getting 4 to 5 year deals, JS likes his 3 yr deals. None of this means it couldn't happen, just points to it being highly unlikely.

I’d be careful mentioning the Seahawks have ways to cut cap. You can write it all for them (and many have) and they will attack you because it doesn’t fit their narrative.

I would pass on Smith. I would go after Dalman at C. Draft a LGon day 1 or 2, preferably day 2. Then start Haynes at RG. Haynes fits this scheme perfectly. If he gets beat out by another guard on the roster so be it. Too early to give up on him though. I’d also sign Zeitler for 1 year as insurance for either guard spot. Then you have a lot of money still for upgrades and depth.

So long as he doesn't retire after half a season , whatever it takes
Trenches are key
Even before JS we were lacking other than a couple years and then , well we all know so I won't rehash

This is one of the best guard FA classes in a long time. I think it’s more likely they dip into the next pool of guys with their cap issues. They’re other guys who would be immediate upgrades you can get much cheaper.

I can't see why the Chiefs would let him go given the priority they put on their interior OL. They don't have another franchise tag candidate. I don't know what their cap situation is, but these teams always find a way to fit in the guys they want. If anything, I would think they do something about Thuney's enormous cap hit while they're in the tail end of his heavily back loaded contract.

Wait, if someone is good on the Chiefs, it's just because they're on the Chiefs? Ok

I agree with most of what you said. The only part I’d disagree with is how good does being on the chiefs make Smith. It may play a factor but he was extremely good in college too. Only reason he fell to the 6th was due to injury concerns. He was always a top guard based on talent alone though. Would I go $25 mil for him? No

I agree. I think they retain him and draft an OT, where they had issues, with their early draft picks. They've always put a premium on oline. They need to shore up their oline and get better at running back/rushing. That was their weakness.

The one thing I do wonder is how much influence the coaching staff will have on the direction we go with the offensive line. They could persuade JS to do something a little more significant than what he's done in the past. That is my hope.

You can be an average player and your teammates can give the illusion of being better than what he really is. Offensive line is a prime example especially IOL. When Ethan Pocic was with the Seahawks he wasnt considered anything special but he than goes to the Browns who had 2 good guards flanking him suddenly he was thought of as a much better player

I do agree with signing Dalman in free agency

That is a good plan for the OL but doubt Schnieder agrees with it he has said he feels good about the players they already have that they just need to be developed. I was a JS fan for a while but a change might be needed to improve the OL. if the Seahawks brass ( Jody) feels improvement isn’t being done she might want to make a change. I would be curious about the true power balance between JS and MM

You can develop backups, they don't have to start.

A couple things. JS KNOWS he has to fix the line, and he doesn't have a long leash to do it. So he will have to bring some players in. That may be through the draft, may be through FA or it may be both. But he can't go with what he has right now and start them. He knows that. He alluded to it in his interview. Klint Kubiak stated he needs an elite Center for his offense to run properly. I think they like Olu a lot but elite he is not. Mike will be in JS's ear to get what he and his coaches need. We already saw that with the MLB positions and I don't see why that would change. JS's job is what can he do to make Mike's job and the rest of the coaches set up for the greatest chance of success. You take their input for starters.

I've said this before and I'll say it again. I don't think JS's job is as hot as people think. They want to win now but tearing it down reduces those odds. But JS knows the biggest thing holding this team back is the O line. I think it will be addressed in every way possible.

Not against Smith, but personally was leaning towards Becton from PHI or Jenkins from CHI as similar-ish upgrades that can possibly be had for less.

I hope you are right because the feeling I got from the interview wasn’t positive. I do think JS is a BS artist and will continue to do what he wants. His philosophy has not changed
