The successful conversion counts one point by kick; two points for a successful conversion by touchdown; or one point for a safety. The defensive team never can score on a try.
I'm trying to figure out how the offensive team could score a safety.
Maybe if the defense were to gain possession in the field of play and the return to or fumble into and out of the end zone? But then it's just 1 point instead of 2? Talk about some shit that's never happened. Interesting though for sure.
Like, the trying team can score a point on a safety if the defending team really flubs up, but the defending team can never score points on that play. That's how I read that.
