I like when public figures are activists for things I agree with. When they are activists for stuff I don't agree with, I think they are stupid celebrities whose opinions aren't any better than anyone else's.

If you think this passive aggressive swipe is somehow thought-provoking, big fail, dude. This is just a bunch of vague 'wishywashiness.' If you have a position, state it clearly.

Its meant to be ironic, pointing how most people feel.

Is how he is using his celebrity as a means to be an activist.

Couldn't agree more. It's why, even as a 9ers fan, I can't criticize Sherman. My respect for him is MUCH bigger than the game.

Sherm has the stones to call out BS. Some people think that players should be happy with their paychecks and shut up, but these guys put their bodies on the line every play. They are the NFL, so they are most certainly entitled to their opinions.

I've been a union rep.
I hope if he is ever offered the job, he turns it down.
Yes, fighting for your bothers is cool and he would be good at it but there is much more to it than that.
It really kinda puts you in a no win position.
My view may be a bit skewed because I had to rep through 2 different strikes. Anyway like I said I hope he never does it.

I admire the value he placed on his academics. He is smart and his education shows.

This.

That being said, I totally agree with the OP. He spent 3 years building a big microphone (media attention) and a strong podium (great player on a great team), and now we see him start to say some important things.

Winner, chicken dinner.

Come on HnP, lighten up a notch.

Back when he was first making headlines with his talk it was obvious to me that it was all pre-meditated, and along with a little luck things have basically turned out like he probably wanted, with his play and his celebrity and rolling that into his brand. Any time someone talks trash about him I always say, really? The guy is a genius at a young age. He went to Stanford studying communications and playing football - and by his mid 20s has taken the utmost advantage of his education in both realms and turned them into a brand, a charitable foundation, and an all-pro career. All the people who don't like his attitude or his opinions, all the people who looked at situations like his blow up on First Take with Skip Balless, and suggest he was out of line - you're wrong. He was right. The proof is in the success he has created for himself.

Sherm is an intelligent player and I have no issue with him speaking his mind, he backs up all of his trash talk with his elite play.

As a Patriots fan, I of course would love to have this guy on my team. But to the question at hand, I admire his intelligence. And not just his football smarts, but his overall intelligence. It's very refreshing to see an athlete speak as articulately as he does. I really enjoy reading articles where he's interviewed or quoted. When his NFL career is over, I'm sure he won't have any problems starting a different career path. He's far too intelligent to be talking about football on those Sunday shows. I expect good things from him down the road.

Although I don't wish to knock Lynch, as I think he's taken enough flack, but those two are 180 degrees apart when it comes to presenting themselves to the public. Even before I saw this thread, I've been thinking this in the run-up to the SB. I just like the guy. He could talk smack to the Patriots, and I wouldn't even notice as I would just be hanging on every word and admiring his eloquence.

Go Pats!

I am a union rep now, it has its pluses and negatives.
Sherman would make a great head rep for the NFLPA, he's smart and isn't afraid to go on the offensive when needed.
